Is there anything to do in Colorado?

Thanks for the fast responses. I am headed to Moab so that way via 128 is a go! Gonna avoid the Denver area and head towards Glenwood area I think. We are gonna stop somewhere short of Denver and camp tonight so we can make our way west during the day, camp somewhere in between Denver and Moab and head into Moab on Friday. Grand Junction sounds intriguing as well

I got a buddy that lives in GW springs. He was kind enough to hold my Scrambler while I was in Iraq. Not a lot there honestly but you won't be disappointed with the drive and views. You'll see some really strange terrain changes before you hit the border. Especially around the airport.

Hell, the Tommyknocker Brewery in Idaho Springs, the Dillon Dam Brewery in Dillon or the Backcountry Brewery in Frisco both just off the highway, the Glenwood Canyon including Hanging Lakes (or just stop at the rest areas and read about the whole construction process), and then what the hell is the Brewpub right across from the Hot Springs in Glenwood Springs by the Amtrak station - or slip off your suit in the free hot springs at South Canyon (exit 111?) Then proceed on to the Colorado National Monument and a pizza at the Spicey Tomato or a burger at Suds in Fruita, but I prefer the Spicey Tomato.

There's also a very good local brewery off the highway in Eagle called Bonfire. It's a local favorite. Beer and popcorn only, can order pizza delivery, dog friendly. You won't find a friendlier place than the Vail Valley.

Wow! Now I'm wishing I had more time in Colorado. I actually think I'm gonna switch up my plans around a bit and hit Colorado for a few days on my way home. This way I can research it a little more and maybe hit a few of the brew joints instead of just 1! Gonna have to call in sick to work to extend my trip but oh well

Seriously, I've lived here 60 years and I still find new things. You might need a really big trailer. The only times I ever felt close to spiritual connections was sitting on a rock watching a sunrise or sunset, If you are out at sunrise, remember your coffee.

When you drive through town, find a bookshop and pick up about anything from Edward Abby. Years ago it was sort of required reading for the park service employees. Monkey Wrench is fun but Desert solitare is more informative.

Just south of GJ is a nice area called Escalante canyon. The is petroglyphs, big pools called pot holes and an old civil war era stone cabin.

The Rampart Rage opened for the season today. Nice drive from Sedalia down to Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs. Might not be in great shape after last weeks snow.

I don't mean to hijack the thread, more of a follow up question about the hot springs...

Does anyone know of any good "wild" hot springs in Colorado? I know there are resort type places in Glenwood and Orvis and all, but I'd like to find a natural pool to take a soak in. Preferably in privacy, but I realize that's not always possible.

for privacy there are resorts with personal hot springs... but there are several that take a good hike to get to ... and a few clothing optional ones as well .... radium springs near vail ... about a mile hike .... conundrum springs near aspen 8.5 mile hike with a 2500 foot elevation gain .... rainbow hot springs near pagosa ... 7 mile hike ..... you get the idea .... anything with a parking lot within a mile will be busy and even the longer hikes I would not bet any money on being alone ... but getting there is part of the fun also

Thanks for the response. I know of most of those but a couple I'll have to look into. I'm a fan of more natural swimming holes, so resorts kind of ruin it for me. I know there are some great backwoods spots, just gotta find them.

Ok, hijack off.

You're not to to Utah yet? There used to be some pools along the river above Carbondale and the turn to Marble. They sort of got demolished as truck drivers ran off of the road looking at the naked women. Somebody mentioned the pool at South Canyon. Just west of Glenwood. south, lots of places. Look at a map. North, you might need to drive a ways to get to places like Steamboat Springs, Like Strawberry Lake or farther north to Saratoga Inn They do have Teepees out there and you can find a private area with a temperature to fit your needs. There is also what is called Hobo Pool in town. Much like a medium sized swimming pool.
About 35 years ago I was in the College doing some geology research and came across an old Government document from about 1887 that listed all of the hot springs in the state, water temps and mineral content. I'm a honest guy. It went back on the shelf. Yeah, I should have written down the reference numbers and attempted to order up a copy.
I have been a working in a library in the past and I don't screw around with books. Something my mommy beat into me. I get a book from a used book store and I have to straighten all of the dog eared pages.

If you are looking for hot springs, I might suggest looking at www.soak.net and searching by state. Not a flashy website but a really good list of springs off the beaten path.
