is THIS a good place for recovery attachment? REAR of F350 SuperDuty

IMO, the shackle insert offers a lot more versatility and security when rigging up a snatch or tow strap. With its two sets of holes, it can be oriented to allow the shackle to swivel up and down or side to side as necessary.

I'd be wary of pulling on that tow eye with any sort of vertical component for fear of it becoming a lever with indeterminate strength.

The safety chain loops on just about any hitch will rip right out. Don't pull on anything bigger than an ATV with them!!

I would also recommend that you get something and put it in the hitch, and I'd also recommend you DO NOT leave something in the hitch all the time, as it'll rust in place if you live east of the Mississippi and you won't be able to remove it when you need to.

The shackle mounts are certainly nice, but for a LONG LONG time, I just used a 2" ball mount with a 3/4" shackle through it. Works fine, easier to carry around, and you will NEVER break it. Plus good for towing hay wagons. :) Get one where the ball mount is welded on at a 45° angle and bent, not one where they just weld a straight piece on the bottom of the square tube. Like this:

To put things in perspective, the WLL of a 3/4" shackle is 4.75 tons, or 9500lbs. (Breaking strength about 4 times that...) The shear strength of the hitch pin is roughly 70,000lbs (+/- depending on grade) and if you look at the area where the bent plate is welded to the square tube, assuming ~1/4" weld, it would take 100,000lbs to rip the two apart. None of this stuff is going to come apart, even with the worst of pulls, and especially when using a kinetic rope.
