Is This Van Stealthy Enough to Stealth Camp With?

It's called vandwelling and many people do it by choice..

Op check out http://reddit.com/r/vandwellers you will find people whom are much more friendly to this lifestyle and not so judge mental and rude.

Btw I vandwell in a 86 Syncro Westy and have little to no problems, but it just depends where you are as to if people will hassle you or not. I tend to go with the idea that my lifestyle shouldn't impose on others so I don't park in front of people's houses or on private land. I tend to have very little problems doing it like this.

Hey- how about a little tolerance - I didn't say I disagree with it. Just think we can call it what it is:ylsmoke:

If you are on another persons property with out their permission, it is trespassing.

Thank you Ranger Rick!

You are obviously missing the whole point of this thread and may I dare say a large portion of this forum.

And to steal your own post;

As another Memorial Day rolls around please take a moments to reflect on those that gave their lives for our freedoms. One of our gratest freedoms is the ability to (mostly) go where we wish when we wish.

And to the OP I don't think that Van is very stealthy. It might fit in FL or AZ where there are some snow birds but it looks pretty camperish to me.

I have missed nothing. The OP want to know if he can go unnoticed camping on other peoples property. Good luck to the OP.

Please tell me in this post where he said he was camping on other people's property?

I was going to park somewhere different every night and park in the same spot maybe only once a month. I figured that hotels and apartment complexes would be the best places since no one could ever really know for sure whether or not I'm just staying for the night (in the case of the hotel) or visiting a friend (in the case of the apartment complex). This van isn't as stealthy as a plain white cargo van, but at the same time it doesn't stand out that bad (in my opinion). Is there anything I could do to make this van more stealthy? I was thinking of getting rid of the stripes and name on the side of the van and just make it completely white. I was also thinking of tinting the back windows as dark as possible (a limo tint).

Are you talking about staying in an apartment or hotel parking lot and calling that trespassing?

I sure hope you don't pull the tags off of your mattress or any other similar ILLEGAL activities!

You are making it sound like he is pulling up in someone's front yard or making a base camp in a gated or fenced off area.

Glad you could add something constructive to this thread!

I am planning to go on the road fulltime. I will make sure I stay off your lawn, lol. My truck will not be stealthy but.... I had a couple ideas about looking like I am traveling on purpose. Have Channel 3 News on the truck or some type of Storm Chasers logo.

I implied nothing.

Thank you for the Ranger Rick comparison.

The van seems completely reasonable. We see stuff like that all the time up in the PNW. I don't think anyone up here would consider that to be anything more than a cool daily driver/weekend fun van at any point.

Having just moved out of an apartment complex, I would have to recommend that you don't use parking there. It's difficult enough in most complexes to have people visit and park without someone unaffiliated taking up a spot. Same with a lot of neighborhoods. Be cool about where you park and think about who you're impacting.

Have fun!

college towns might offer a greater degree of latitude with this lifestyle. sign up for one class - even to monitor as a non-matriculating student, and you'll have an ID and maybe even able to tap into the showers, pool, movies, and locals discount everywhere.

Its called boondocking, and when you check into a hotel/motel you give them your vehicle info.

if they actually check for unregistered vehicles in the lot is a crap shoot...

I would feel safer about being parked behind a large church. they usually have lighting, and a van isnt that out of place.

also most wal-marts dont do anything to run campers off that arent there long term (at least thats the reports available online) national forests allow single spot camping for up to 7 days without a permit.

I work for a local park and rec and we are in the process of opening an "out door adventure park" almost 200 acres with 7 lakes in the middle of town. (it used to be a gravel pit outside of town, but the pit closed, and flooded, and town grew) once they finalize water and electricity to the property there is a chance I'll sell the house and move my into an RV there. With a wife and brand new miniature human we have scheduled for a mid January arrival.

Where!?!

Many different times now, I have stealth camped in the parking lots of hotels and apartment complexes and stayed up very late in the night and never even saw any security guards. If there are security guards hanging out, I honestly don't think they get paid enough to really care about checking the licence plate of every single car in the parking lot. Even if they figure out my licence plate isn't in their directory, if I'm only there for one night every few months, they have no way of knowing for sure whether or not I'm just visiting someone for the night. I've heard of people who've been getting away with this for years and, in some cases, even decades. It's a great lifestyle for those who value freedom and who want to be more independent of the "system." When you never have to pay rent, you save up a ton of money (very fast) and, if you want, you can easily live off of working 20 hours per week or even just 10 hours per week. I'd be very comfortable living 6 months of the year in an off-grid home in the middle of nowhere, and spend the other 6 months traveling and stealth camping in various different locations.
