I'll be heading down to do the trail in May, 4 days 3 nights. How much actual driving is there during the day, is there time to go for short hikes and explore on foot or am I going to have to drive most of the day just to get to camp?

..WRT..Is the camping like the back country camping (within the rules) out at Death valley or, do they only have like 1-2 official campsites that you must camp at now?

There are 20 designated campsites along the trail. Permits to camp are required and fill up far in advance.

The trail is 100 miles long, and driving is not too difficult so you will have lots of time for side trips and hikes.
