By itself an RTI "ramp" is useless. What this trick allows you to do is inspect the vehicle while crossed up. Can be quite amazing where things move to that you didn't expect. You can also easily figure out which suspension is the stiffer as the body will favor leaning in the direction that the stiffer axle is tilted.
As noted above, a level surface is an absolute requirement in using this technique.
I use ramps for fluid changes and four stands for brake work and tire rotations.
Harbor Freight or Pep Boys have decent heavy duty jack stands that won't break the budget. Pep Boys and Wal-Mart usually carry the Rhino ramps that are inexpensive and very durable.
