I had one for several months over 1.5 yrs ago. I sold it as I didn't have a way of getting it titled and tagged for the streets of Kansas. KS stated it was a specific military vehicle designed for offroad (pulling airplanes). Even with modifing it with street components, they wouldn't allow it on the street.
Stock, its max speed on the road was 25mph. The rear axle is a D70U (dually width) with 4.88s and powerlock. The front axle is a dummy D44 (straight tube with D44 knuckles out). The frame is a modified Waggoneer frame. The stock tcase is a NP198. There is no shift fork or gear synchro for hi. It is fixed in low. I still have that in my garage. Trans is a 727 with an aluminum adapter. I had swapped in a d300 to get more streetable mph. It bolted right in. The turtleback is 1/4" plating and quite heavy. There is also a 1200-1500# block of steel across the frame above the rear axle. The Nissan diesel is the same engine thrown in the 79/80 Scouts. Its comes NA.
Stretch the frame to a reasonable bed length, build a bed ala' a Willys pick-up bed using similar rear fenders, re-gear and re-install the D70 using the GM 63's, and put a CJ-5/7 front clip on it!
