Jeep commander or Hummer H3

Hey guys I know this is a jeep forum but I was wondering if I could get your input. I'm in the market to get a new suv I was looking at an 06 jeep commander with the 5.7 and quadra drive 2, and a 06 hummer. I'm stuck between those 2. I plan on doing some mild trails with it, and also need something for the snow. I kinda thought the quadra drive 2 systems seems like a nice setup. What do yo guys think?

H3s are real nice as long as they are setup right...

Commander just seems too STREETy if you know what I mean...
(just speaking from my own point of view, i assume another Commander owner might say/think otherwise)

Coming from working at a chrysler dealership then going to gm for a while. Unless you get an h3 alpha with the v8 power you will always be wanting more and try and find one with the rear factory locker. The commander on the other hand has good power and has a very good awd setup but ground clearance is seemingly low, but learn to drive right and you can make it through with out any issue. Both are good vehicles though

If you are going to tow, or need seating for 7 (small people) the Commander is the better option.

I don't know enough about the offroad world yet to truely comment on which is better, but a Hemi with QD-II hasn't done me wrong yet :bike_rider:

Huge difference of interior space between the two. H3's interior really is a kind of smallish. I drove them both, I owned a Commander for about 18 months and had an H3 as a rental car for a week. I'd go with the Commander. Biggest downfall IMHO of the 06 Commander though is the ridiculously small gas tank - 19 gallons if I remember correctly - which is a pita. Chrysler corrected that problem and 07 on up had a larger tank. MPG is about the same marginal for both vehicles. The Commander did quite well off road, especially after getting her off the ground with 2.5 inch Teraflex lift and slightly larger tires; it's basically a WK Grand Cherokee with different body; whatever off-road wise is true for the WK also holds true for the Commander.

:sombrero: I've always LIKED the Hummer H3 alpha and especially with the v8, but

I think the jeep commander would be your best choice, repair/replacement parts easier and more plentiful and cheaper

Overall physical size on the jeep is better and easier to handle and LOTS of aftermarket mod parts for decent prices--

COMMANDER !!

Or, you could look for an 07 JKU Rubi !!the cats meow :victory:

Good luck

We had a 5.7 Commander and it was great. The clearance issue can be cured with lift and tires and there are lots of accessorise coming out for them. We had quads at the time and used it to pull the trailer into the back country to play, but there were places we went with it (stock) that we would not have taken some others we have owned!

I had one. Wheeled it, used it. look for my build thread. i liked it, but the front end differential seems week along with the suspension setup. i was able to get decent mileage out of mine with the 4.7LV8.

I've never driven a Commander but I have driven the H3 and I feel they are pretty underpowered with the I5 engine IMHO. Although a friend of mine did just purchase one and he seems to like it. I may be biased but I say get the Commander with the 5.7.

Although I'm a Jeep girl, I'd have to go with the H3 Alpha on this one. Aluminum block V8, 2 speed t-case, F/R lockers, 4.10's, a frame (no unibody)......

FWIW, we love our Commander. It suits our needs very well. I've had it all over Utah, from desert to mountain. They do sit a touch low, but it's nothing that a small lift won't cure.

All you have to do is sit in the H3 and you'll realize its not the one. The cabin is short almost car like. You end up sitting in it in this awkard car/suv in between zone. My brother's XJ with an interior roll cage had more room. My JK feels open spacious, upright, great visibility. I'd take a hard look at a 4dr JK, but since it sounds like you want 8 cylinders go for the commander for sure.

When my family gets bigger, its going to be 4dr JK, New Grand Cherokee, or used Commander if we're still poor.
