Jeep diesel discussion and the future.

A 5.3L or 6.2L LS can get good mileage, make good power, be pretty reliable. It's incredibly easy to find parts for and you can pull into any GM dealership and have them look at it.

If you're worried about fuel then buy a few 55 gal drums of gasoline. It's impossible to say where we will be at this time next year or five years from now, But you can be prepared for right now.

Sure... but not all three while towing stupid large loads. Lots of weight and you use more power to move(wear and tare), more fuel to create that power ( money) and still won't drag as much along happily as a diesel. But for less extreme applications its ok.

Sooo... 55 gallons of gas at say 3.40 a gallon is 187 bucks. If you get 20MPG you can now travel 1100 miles (provided you use every drop). Assuming you didn't buy Ethanol blended fuel as it only has a 90 day shelf life... your good to go when the zombies come. Unless of course you either didn't store that fuel well and it went bad. Have a finicky car that doesn't like anything but good gas. Or the zombies latched onto your leg while you were trying to strap that 55 gallon barrel onto the roof of your prius... :O
Personally I'd rather have an old tech diesel that will burn whatever... make my own solar power in tubes which creates algae and then use the algae to make my own biodiesel. :)

Okay... So you are going to be towing 24/7 365 and you will always be on the move so that you will have no where to store fuel? Sounds like you are screwed no matter what engine setup you go with.

Well crap, why don't you just convert to an engine that will run on baby seal oil. Problem solved!!

If I could afford to put a diesel in my (current) 1999 XJ I would...
But I'm not going to go into debt to do it, If I had a influx of $$$$ I would put it very high on the list of things to do.

Mike Manley has just said some stuff about the new Diesel Grand Cherokee coming in early 2013:

The whole article is here: http://wardsauto.com/auto-makers/diesel-powered-jeep-will-bow-detroit-show-hit-dealers-q1

If the emails and the letters I've gotten from Jeep customers are anything to go by, it (the Diesel GC) will be very, very good

Which is great, as it shows he's hearing that we want diesels.

“I see that growth continuing,” Manley says about diesel popularity in the U.S. “As people realize that diesel not just offers great fuel economy but also good driving dynamics in a clean way, I see that part of the segment continue to grow.”

Jeep also is focused on improving fuel economy for the Wrangler without sacrificing its rugged capability, the executive says. Adding that fuel economy is of the greatest concern. “By using technology intelligently, we can stay very true to Jeep brand"

Tantalizingly close to saying a diesel Wrangler is being considered, which at this point we have to think it really is.
We know the 3.0 passes all the emissions tests, and we know it mates well to the 5-speed already in the Wrangler...

A diesel will once you process it. :O

I wouldn't read too much into stuff quoting execs. They've been saying stuff similar to the quoted since I started getting into 4x4s in the 90s.

The climate is different now, granted, but I'll believe it when I see it.

The make a Jeep wrangler deisel but it is only for sale in Europe also they make a conversion for it on http://www.bruiserconversions.com/ they also do other engine coversions also from what I hear they are going to offer a deisel engine in the Grands starting 2013/2014

There are multiple companies offering diesel conversions, including Bruiser. The issue is that they are only marketed for off-road use due to the fact you can't get them registered if emissions tests are required in most states.

The .70 cents + a gallon difference is starting to turn me off of diesel and two of my three vehicles are diesel.

I hope this finds its way to a wrangler.

From the link:
Time to quit your bellyaching and pony up your pennies, Jeep fans. Chrysler has announced the Jeep Grand Cherokee will bow with a 3.0-liter V6 turbodiesel engine in the first quarter of next year. The engine yields 237 horsepower and an impressive 406 pound-feet of torque, and all that twist shows up from 1,800 rpm on. If you're counting, that's 16 lb-ft more than the 5.7-liter V8. Expect to see it bolted to a six-speed automatic transmission. As you may recall, this isn't the first time we've heard this news.

Jeep CEO Mike Manley let the news slip while speaking with Ward's Auto at the LA Auto Show, and said if buyer feedback is any indication, the new model should see healthy sales. Manley also pointed to the now deceased Liberty diesel, which the executive said that enjoyed a faithful, if small following. Odds are we'll hear more about pricing and fuel economy when the diesel Grand Cherokee gets an official unveil at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show.

I hope this finds its way to a wrangler.

We know the engine passes all the emissions tests, and we know it mates to the 5-speed auto currently in the Wrangler.

Even if Jeep don't offer it from the factory in the Wrangler (which I hope like hell they do) we can all-but-gurantee shops will offer the conversion.

Recent quotes say Jeep are "focused on fuel economy" for the Wrangler and
"Are putting a lot of faith in diesel"

so...

Well, Since Burnsville has such a close relationship with Chrysler... I expect to see a JK diesel kit in 12-16 months.

Also, I believe Chrysler is eventually going to mate the 3.0L diesel to the 8-speed automatic to help even further with mpg.
