Jeep JK Air Filter options and opinions

As the title says I am looking at replacing the stock air filter. I have a 2010 JKUR with the 3.8. To this point I have gotten the simple replacement paper filter from autozone, or advanced.

They always seem to be out of stock at my local branches when I need one and I have never seen the FRAM. I am always stuck buying the Purolator version which is like 25+ bucks.

I have been thinking of picking up one of these:

Or one of these:

Both Afe filters in the Pro Dry S version to I don't have to do any oiling. I am wanting a non oiling filter to avoid issues with the MAP sensor.

My question is between the two do you think the 2nd one would make it easier to ingest water? To that regard i prefer the First one. Just like the stock nice and flat and simple. Now the other issue is with the round deep version it would allow me to put an Outerwears pre-filter on which would help cut down on dust and other large particulate matter from clogging the filter. Any input or opinions on either filter? Any other options out there people swear buy?

Thanks guys!

Unless you stick with the Wix or Purolator, definitely go with the Pro Dry, too many horror stories with the oiled filters.

I prefer the dry, washable filters when I'm using something like that. The oiled filters either seem to get under oiled and let dirt through, or get over oiled and cause problems with airflow sensors and such. And they because a nasty mud in dusty envrironments. I ran an AEM intake on another truck with a dry filter and it was always spotless inside the intake tube.
Used in the stock air box, it shouldn't be any more/less likely to suck up water as far as I can see.

Is there any documentation on filter area between the two versions? I'm having a hard time seeing more surface area in the cone type version. More surface area = less restriction clean or dirty.

The flat filter type is fine over the cone. Both are prob going to outperform stock. With that being said, the biggest noticeable gains are at high end H.P. and RPM ranges, unless you are balls to the wall all the time, the difference will be small. The performance results from filters are usually on higher hp engines. I.M.O. I would stick with the flat filter. Water in the box is going to suck no matter what filter you are running. I have a snorkel as insurance against the hydrolock. I have been seeing more data/complaints on the oiled filters and the actual dirt blocking capabilities. Your flat AFE filter claims alot more cfms than the stock filter and if you look at the stock air box on the JK it is HUGE! Also, the cone AFE filter doesn't offer any cfm specs??? The airbox pulls a lot of air, most people think of a stock box as restrictive, but it is a good design IMO. Plus the JK was designed with a flat filter from the factory.

I went with the Banks CAI. So far i have had zero issues. When it does get dirty I take it out and wash allow to dry then oil it up. Every time i remove it for cleaning I check the intake tube as well as the throttle body and have yet to find any dirt. That being said....it wasn't cheap.

i have drop in cone style pro guard 7 and its been holding up well. Its always spotless in the intake tube after each trip unlike the K&N i had before.

I would believe that you would do just fine w/o a pre filter in Va. If you take trips to AZ or Utah type terrain then you may want a pre filter to pop on when you finally get to a fine sand/dirt/dusty destination.

otherwise a prefilter is just a piece of foam you put over the top of a high flow air filter that ends up reducing your air flow, unless you use a chamber type like the aev snorkle

Thanks for all the input guys!
Sorry for the few days down.... My wife and I had our 2nd child and my first son! :wings:

not that my daughter doesn't camp with me or "help" me change the oil but it is nice to know your name carries on!

Any way air filters.....

I am definitely going with the dry filter media no oiling for me! I wasn't looking into this for the "performance" gains... An old lesson I learned from dirt bikes and quads was simply if you are going to feed it then you have to let it ****. So if you have an air filter you will need a high flow exhaust. No interest in exhaust... Yet....

This is to cut down on the cost I have going into air filters which has been approx $100 a year. So by going with a reusable filter I save 40 in the first year. Not too bad.

I wanted to go with the pre-filter to reduce the amount of large grit that will initially clog a filter to reduce service intervals and cleaning but after reading your post a light went off and yeah I think your right prob not needed....

Any other input or ideas? I like the stock box but really wish their was a way to move the intake from the front to the back with out adding a snorkel.... I like the snorkel systems out there but there are parts about each I don't like or feel like are a weakness in the system.

Thanks guys.
