In the late 1960's Kaiser Jeep won the bid to product some 5 quarter (1.25ton) multi-use trucks for the U. S. Government. They beat out G.M. in the bidding and produced thousands of these for the Military. My thought is, it would make a great expedition build-up. It has a removable arctic cab top; the front windscreen folds down, and half doors in true Jeep style.
And so the querrie is: has anyone done this before? If so, step up and let us see pictures and specs.
The rig looks like a Jeep Gladiator on steroids with gigantic half-round front fender (reminiscent of the Dodge Power Wagon of old) with a foot of tire clearance before the fender and a sturdy Dana 60/Dana 70 axle arrangement with extremely low geared pigs. They used a T-98 Borg Warner trans. (6.40 low gear) and a divorced Dana 200 t. case, with 2:1 low range. The worst part of the truck was the aenemic Kaiser in-line six, which was barely able to put 110 horse power to the ground.
However, with a Cummins diesel engine (either 4BT or 6BT) and a Clark 280 VO, 5 speed 5 ton truck trannie, this could be a winner.
Anyone done this?
I've had and built a lot of Jeeps in my day, but this one is the biggest Jeep ever factory-built.
Hoping someone has,
