Jeep or tacoma

It can be debated all day long but when it comes down to it Toyota makes the most reliable vehicles in the world. Now if you want to keep the JK for the cool factor, then definitely go for it. A 4 door Jeep is very cool.

Edit: Root Moose, I also see that you have stuck with the reliable vehicles that Jeep actually did produce. they got it pretty right with the XJs and MJs. Time will tell what kind of rep the JKs have. I have owned more jeeps than Toyotas over my lifetime, by the way, Im not a hater.

Not a hater here either. Toyota absolutely makes a good product. I just like to take people to task when they cast a blind eye to the foibles of any product and state unsubstantiated things as absolutes. Example: "Most reliable vehicles in the world" Citation? ;)

I've seen too many Toyota owners gloss over problems with their vehicles. There was the guy I knew that replaced the head gaskets in the V6 in his 4Runner twice and still said his engine was more reliable than anything out there.

I like to poke at the delusional. :)

Jeeps have their issues - especially the old junk from before the EFI age. The modern stuff is pretty good.

I do believe that Toyota has consitantly built more reliable vehicles than any other car manufacturer. I'm not delusional though. The 3.0 was nothing but crap, I have owned one. So was the "ABS" system on the 2nd gen 4runners. Toyota definitely isnt perfect, but I think they have done a better job than everyone else, save maybe Honda. But Honda hasnt been in the US 4x4 market for 30 years so they dont count. Jeep TJs, XJs, and WJs with the 4.0 have stood the test of time. I hope the JKs do too.

There is a reason they have come as far as they have, and a reason why the current acceleration BS has as well. They are HUGE competition for the big 3. While in highschool and post secondary I changed oil part time. After a few years of doing that you can start to tell what the most reliable vehicles are. Toyota and Honda are definately on top of that list, I cant tell you how many civics or camrys I saw with over 500,000km on them.

I am obviously biased to Toyota, but as I mentioned earlier I would absolutely LOVE to have a Ruby. The places they will go, and the things you can do to them are obvious selling points to me. I just require a truck.

I guess in the end just be glad that no matter what choice you make neither are bad, they are both fantastic vehicles who have different +'s than the other one.

To the original poster, I'm biased towards the taco.

Did Toyota ever issue a recall for the 3.0 head gasket issue? IIRC they didn't but that was a long time ago.

I'm just giving a hard time "because". ;) Toyota definitely makes a vehicle to a higher standard than Chrysler. That said, the Jeeps still get the job done without a lot of B.S.

Nothing wrong with old iron. The issue becomes finding something worth working with that isn't going to cost a small fortune to get reliable.

Why do you use the Jeep as a daily driver? I think that speaks volumes about which to keep. Also, the jeep is going to be more capable in whatever terrain you might find yourself in. Both platforms have huge amounts of bolt on upgrades available, but Jeeps tend to develop a patina based on your personality, whereas, you can always find another Taco....They just don't have the same character.

What is nice about the old stuff that is super simple, not too much to go wrong. You don't have to spend too much if you do all the work yourself.

I have a couple few vehicles, no worries if one is broken. One always seems to be in a state of controlled chaos.

Keep the Taco! I just test drove a JK 4 door and unless it has AEV suspension and 5.7 Hemi, you couldn't pay me to drive one! Just my opinion of course. I am sure all the Jeep owners love their rigs.:costumed-smiley-007

Just google topgear hilux video and watch how tuff the old truck is when they try and destroy it. Maybe an old jeep would do the same im not so sure ???

Its all in good fun, I love both manufacturers. Hey Jeep is all American!

Yeah, they issued a recall on the head gasket. My 91 runner had already been taken care of by the dealership when I got my hands on it. They had replaced the head gasket but they also did a full top end rebuild at no cost. Of course it still didnt fix the fact that it was a 3.0.

I am not a huge fan of new Toyotas, they have broken away from their roots. When I think of Toyota I think of mini trucks and Land Cruisers.
One thing I will give Jeep props on, at least they are still putting a solid axle in the front of the Wrangler.

Edit: By the way is the original poster still in this thread? Judging by his screen name maybe not??

That was an awesome episode! Ive have seen similar done to an older XJ. It took a beating and kept on going and going. XJs have sloppy tolerances but are full of heart!
