Jeep Too Wimpy To Tow

First politics and religion got spoiled. Will we have to ban towing and Jeep threads too? I love it here but where will it end? How about a little self control folks?

Is this thread spiraling down to a level at which "my rig is better than your rig"?

It matters not what brand or model we drive, or how it is or is not modified. We are all interested in doing the same thing with different vehicles.

If you read back over the thread a problem was expressed and a solution provided, let's leave it at that.

Jeez, lighten up a bit mate - is all in good humour, especially given that the owner is also saying in his 2nd post here "I should've gotten the FJ Cruiser"............some of you Jeep owners are soooooooooooooo sensitive, & defensive........ :)

Bill, using the factory gear-set fitted by an authorised dealer really is best case solution. Bear in mind, at the end of the day, (if it comes to 'the crunch'.), you've really gotta decide just how important a 'lifetime' warrenty is on the thing. No use not having it suited to your needs, in order to keep the warrenty valid, especially given that most manufacturers will run screaming from warrenty claims given ANY mods, (which includes significantly bigger tyres being fitted).

You brought it for a reason - now begins the fun part of making it best suited to your needs, & turning it into something thats individually yours that stands out from others being used as 'pave-ment ponies'.

Remember to let us know the differance the re-gear makes if/when ya get it done...... ;) :)

If I read the posts correctly you have 3.73s? If so I think I would go lower than 4.10 if I was going to spend the money on a regear. At least 4.56s.

I put 4.88s in my TJ Unlimited Rubicon, was running 33s.

Now have 4.88s in my V8 4Runner also with 33s. I can pull some amazing loads with this combo.

Good luck.

Sure you have 3.73's? I have an 08 x 2dr with 3.73's and 32's and have towed 3k# up steep inclines, it wasnt happy to do it but I pulled 45-55 up 10% grades for 2 miles with out issues and still got 16 mpg.. My 07 was able to do much better with the 4.10's but an old lady killed that jeep and put me on the DL for the last 8 months.. Most saharas came with 3.21's unless it had the tow package. 4.56's would be good or 4.88's as they might be easier to get..
Good luck..
And FJ's are nice too,, I used to drive taco's and even had a fj years ago,, but couldn't take what toyota did to the FJ.. its a fine car,, just doesnt seem like an FJ,, it be like calling a liberty a cj.. ok not that bad,, but you get the general idea..

Thread drift is natural, Martyn; it's like a conversation at a party. You throw a great party, btw.
I got what I was looking for --- peer opinions and approval...

Yes, definitely 3.73 was stock in all the '08 Saharas. 4.56's have been ordered and will be installed by Performance OffRoad Center next week.

As for Mini's autotrans, it's a Japanese-sourced slushbox; same source that Lexus uses. I can out-do the manual box boys at Deal's Gap with it; much easier to work the tight stuff with the shift on the wheel.

I love the Mini but I'm trying to talk the wife into trading it for an FJ... ...I get into too much trouble driving the Mini; it brings out the hellion in people.
If you've never driven one, especially a modified one, you owe it to yourself to try it. Phil Wicks runs a school that's subsidized by BMW/Mini; you're able to rent one of his racecars and thrash it on the track for a day (or thrash your own car, of course).

One of my previous Minis; manual Getrag gear box:

That yellow thing looks neat,, but not much ground clearance,, how does it do in the rocks?
I was out looking at jk4drs to replace the wifes liberty and 3 of the saharas had 3.21's and none had the tracloc rear.. which is a big plus in snow.. Then we were told what the trade value for our libby was.. so its a keeper till it dies.. Just hit 2 years old, in mint cond and trade value is only 10k,, paid 25k, 23 months ago..

Let us know how you like the 4.56's,,, thats where I think I'm heading on my 2dr..

Heres another 'thread drift' (what a neat term huh!!) -, anyway, - Hey there Hilldweller - re yr quote "I love the Mini but I'm trying to talk the wife into trading it for an FJ...", now THIS, is the proper cure for your hassles........(cancel the diff jobs quick.......!!!)

Take the towball off the Jeep, Trade the Mini - give yr Mrs back the Jeep SHE wanted, & you then end up with a decent vehicle with getting the mighty Jeep eating Toyo.......... :) :)

Wins all round I reckon...........

It did better than the one I have now. The newer one only resides about 1.5" above the tarmac and has so much negative camber that it feels wonky unless it's pulling 1.2 g's laterally. Great fun on a nice smooth road though. And more torque/hp from its 1.6L mill than I get from my 3.8L Jeep....

No problems with "Thread drift".

As we have all seen thread deteriorate happens quickly when people make insensitive remarks. Couple that with brand loyalty and the problem is compounded.

We have witnessed a spate of thread closures, deletions, and locked sections recently, and in my opinion we need to police ourselves to avoid this in the future.

There are plenty of forums out there where you can hurtle abuse at others, and have abuse heaped on you. I enjoy this forum because there is very little "Heavy weight Ego" being thrown around.

The delineation between civil discussion and verbal abuse seems to be one bad post apart. So unless we can be more tolerant of each others views I see that either the members must take an active roll or the burden will be left to the poor moderators.

Have you ever noticed that the IQ is usually inversely proportionate to the chest-thumping ego quotient?
Take this as a compliment, if you will; you've attracted a pretty smart crowd here. I feel at ease, supported, and generally well respected. This is the most civil and enlightened interweb site that I visit.

And I'll give that an AMEN and AMEN!!

WOW!!! What a difference the new gears make!!!! :26_7_2:

Remarkable. Really. I mean it. Like, holy moly, why the heck doesn't it come with 4.56's from the factory???
It's getting better fuel economy, it's peppy, doesn't shift so much or hunt for gears, doesn't lose speed on those pesky hills, etc.
Jeep --- are you listening?

Dang; it's dangerous-fun to drive now... :clapsmile
