I would say for mild off roading a torsion axle or leaf sprung axle would be fine. If you are planning on hitting some fast rough roads, then money needs to be spent but if its just tow it to a trail and roll over a few rocks and camp... either cheap option would suffice.
I'd go with a leafspring over torsion if offroading is involved.. They hold up well and are proven tough.. I've seen torsion flex axles fail,, even just using them on the street.. I'm not a fan, especially for the extra $$ they cost.
I've not logged many miles over the years towing a trailer, but the only trailer suspension failure that I've ever experienced was a broken main leaf.
My point is that anything can & will eventually fail.
Leafs are such a simple system and you can adjust easily to gain ground clearance buy buying longer shackles and hangers not to mention they are cheaper. I think your money would be better spent getting a Lock-N-Roll coupler.
