I'm currently working (long-term project) on my 2010 JKUR for expedition/camping travel, and am soliciting advice. I would like to add fuel storage and put it on the outside of the vehicle so I don't have to worry about carrying it in the cab. I've been researching the tire carriers for this purpose. However, the two things that bother me about converting the rear bumper to a tire carrier are:
1) The additional 180lb + of weight. These things are heavy, and most likely unnecessarily so. What happened to the simple rectangular bumper with recovery points they made for the TJs? Most of the new bumpers look like they belong on that Pontiac Aztec crossover thing.
2) It seems like a waste to add the tire carrier for jerrycans. I'm not planning on adding 44" tires. I will be needing a place to store the highlift though.
Does anyone know of a good setup that's not going to add the weight of an additional passenger?
Is it necessary to add the tire carrier or are there additional options I'm not considering?
How necessary is rugged protection for the rear bumper?
any advice is appreciated.
thanks,
Brian
