JK armor and suspension?

Adventurer
My buddy bought Pro Comp's 4dr JK show vehicle a year or two ago and he's too broke to do anything with it, so I'd like to look into it for him and maybe even surprise him with a set of sliders or something.
The Prom Comp (oops, did I spell that wrong?) make-over consisted of throwing on a ~4" suspension lift and a ~2" body lift, some 35" MTs, and some badging. The gearing might even be factory. Bumpers are factory and there is no tow hitch. He has run into some problems with the rear coils being too wide and rubbing against "a bar," which I assume means the control arms, anti-sway bar or panhard rod. I'm not sure how JKs are set up. Pro Comp's support has been non-existent. Would the fix be as simple as getting narrower coils of the same spring rate and length or am I oversimplifying? Would these be stamped with an ID?
The amount of info I can get from him is pretty limited since he lives in San Jose and I live in Sacramento.
I'd like to find some inexpensive and functional sliders and maybe some way of attaching recovery points front and back. It seems that the JK market is geared toward $$$ gear, with no zero-frills bumpers.
I'm a Toyota owner so I don't know much about Jeeps. Not that my specific knowledge is anything special. I do know that my buddy has wanted a Wrangler for a while and it sucks that the most use it gets is hauling some snowboards to Tahoe 'cause he can't divert more money into it.
So are there any sources of cheap sliders and recovery solutions? And what should I find out to move towards fixing the suspension rubbing?

He may already have sliders - the Rubicon option package included a set of factory "rock rails" that are actually reasonably stout. I know that I've certainly used rocks to gouge mine pretty well and they've stood up. If he has the Rubicon package, it will also have a reasonable set of recovery points up front already.

There are some "no-frills" bumpers out there for the JK, but you do have to go looking for them. A couple of companies make some pretty affordable stubbies. Rugged Ridge, Rancho, and Olympic all make winch mount type stubbies that are pirced under $400.

You could also look on "jk-forum" in the marketplace section. Lots of people either sell or give away their take-offs. Bumpers, rock rails, recovery points....

As far as rubbing goes, my guess is that he's got rubbing happening between his rear coils and either the rear sway bar or the rear sway bar links...but that is truly a guess.

If they only put 35's on that JK, I'd be surprised if they put that much lift on. Most people who run 35's on a JK tend to usde about 2.5 to 3.5 inches of lift...and if you bumpstop properly, those will not rub at all. 4 inches of suspension lift and 2 inches of body lift would be serious overkill - and body lifts make JK's look pretty funny, too.

As far as having stock gearing goes that may or may not be a problem on those 35's. JK's come with a pretty good range of gearing. If he's got 4.10's and a six speed, then 35's should not be a problem. If he's got taller gears and a slushbox, then re-gearing would make a huge difference.

To be honest with you, we'll need a lot more information before we can really help.
