JK Gas Blow Back

I guess I'm going to ask this here, because I don’t know many JK people who do there on work on there jeeps. The blow back mechanism on the JK gas tank seam to wear out pretty fast and with a tank of gas getting in to the $60 range I can’t be blowing gas out all over the ground. Has anyone tackled fixing this problem themselves yet? If so how much and how hard was it. :smiley_drive:

I had the same issue with my '07 Rubi. Chrysler fixed it under warranty by replacing the gas tank and filler neck last year. Since then I received a letter from Chrysler letting me know I have a lifetime warranty for this issue. It depends on when your Jeep was manufactured. If you do a search on jk-forum.com you can get all the details.

Call your dealer and ask them about the following service bulletin. Mixed results regarding the issue some say they fall within the fix others say they do not.

Service Bulletin # 14-001-11, dated February 11, 2011.
Fuel Spit Back During Refueling (Unlimited Time and Mileage Warranty Extension)

Models:
2007 - 2008
Note:
This Extended Warranty Bulletin applies to vehicles equipped with 3.8L engine (sales code EGT) built between March 1, 2007 March 31, 2008.

Repair Procedure:
Replace the fuel tank.

Just developed the fuel overflow issue this past month. The dealer put me on the list for a back ordered new tank. Being that this is a covered warranty issue I'm not sure it would be worth your time trying to fix it.

My 2007 was built in 2006 I bought it in November of the year, so it is outside the warrenty.

I have already had the hole wiring harness replaced, thank God that was under warranty. This is one of the growing reason that this will more than likely be the last new jeep I ever own. I really am thinking about selling my JK and My Rover and getting a TJ Unlimited Rubicon.

Don't be so sure they won't fix it. My '07 was built in '06 as well, and my dealer didn't hesitate to fix the problem. The problem is the backflow valve which prevents gas from backing up and out of the tank in case of rollover. Wouldn't hurt to ask.

The JK and TJ guys seem to have more issues with this, but I also have issue on my 05 KJ and my 05 Dakota if I try to put in any more than when the tank first shuts off on it's own. It seems many Mopar trucks and SUVs of this era have a similar problem.

Call your dealer and ask. If they say no, report the problem to the NHTSA and get a case number.

I just got a new tank. They wanted to charge me labor because I have a lift; I reminded them that they sell Jeeps there with lifts...
I told them to forget the work then, take my Jeep down and I'd come get it.
They went ahead and did the work anyhow; they had already taken off the lift, taken out the tank.

It hasn't spit gas since then.
But it has overflowed twice and not shut off... Not sure if the pump was the problem or the Ed Voyles mechanic.

I'm very careful when I fill up now. I listen to the fill and I never leave the pump.
