Hey everybody great site hope I.m doing this right. I used to drive a car carrier and deliver Gen I monteros back in 89 and 90, always liked them for their style and capabilities.Did lot of research Gen 2.5 seem to be hard to find now a days found a 99 in Florida flew down bought it for 2600 drove it 20 miles rod started knocking took it back luckily guy gave back the money and discovered one in Fredericksburg Virginia.I live in west virginia so drove down picked up the 98 looks like it has all options. Not sure what all options are but seems to have most of them headlight washers heated seats and rear locker.Plan on doing timing belt and water pump and tensinor then change all fluids out but seem to be a good deal paid $2300 for her. Look forward to getting any good advice this is my first post and first Monty thanks for looking. HMontero 016.jpgMontero 019.jpgMontero 021.jpgMontero 022.jpg Montero 013.jpg

I'm thinking very seriously about buying one myself, but it happens to be two hours away, and I don't know how well I'll fit. How tall are you guys that have these things? I'm 6'3 with a 34" inseam and hope this will work for me. Very sharp truck by the way, congrats.

funny you mention that. Im experiencing the same exact issues, I am 155K. Sometimes it gets locked and wont unlock. Ill be changing the diff fluid. Hopefully that helps.

I did some research on this one - line damage is common, so is failure of the rear locker pump. It's rarely something in the locker unless someone has douchbagged it and and engaged while under wheelpin.

Thanks for the info, do you mean the compressor for the locker is that what you are calling the locker pump? My comp comes on runs for maybe 5 or 6 seconds and when i move it, will come on again for a second like it trying to engage and I get the 5 to 10 second dash light at start up solid then goes out. I,ll have to see if can find which line goes in the diff to to if its rubber or a hard line. Thanks!

yes thats the locker pump, its located underneath the rear right passenger seat. You will hear it come pump for few seconds when you hit the R/D switch. Check the rubber line that runs to the rear diff.

IIRC its a hard line. In mine it turns on maybe every 5 minutes or so when the locker is in use.

It a rubber hose that run from the compressor to the third member. In all the years I've been messing with these trucks I've never seen a bad hose. I'm not saying they don't go bad, just never seen one.

If it turns on as often as you say you have a leak somewhere, most likely the locker itself.

re98,
Maybe the light circuit is messed up. Is the locker engaging? Try it on the street by driving in a circle. If it locked you will no it.
