Jurgens Trax

Hello All,
Just thought I'd post up some images of the Jurgens Trax camper. Until a short while ago I did not even know this thing existed. I still do not know if it is even available to the general public, as it is used by several rental outfits. I just thought it may be something that appeals to the good folks on here.
It is essentially a Jurgens Oryx on a truck bed. In Southern Africa they put them on Hilux' and Nissan Navarra (Frontier). I think this would look pretty hot on a Tacoma, if it would also fit on a DC long bed.

Tell me what you think.
Rou

The fold out side is genius, very cool stuff there.
Find out a price and if they will ship it over and I bet you will see some interest.

Thanks for keeping us hungry for cool new toys :)

That looks like it has a lot of potential. I'd like to see more pics from different aspects. From the 2 exterior views it looks like it's not a drop-in or attach's to the bed, but rather replaces the whole bed of the truck.

I agree, Lance. If we can get one over, mate it to a Taco or similar truck, I think we'd have a winner.
We'll try to get the Oryx over for OX2012. I'd love to hear the feedback, because i think the space utilization is excellent. Keep in mind that there is a 60qt fridge/freezer in there, as well as a 2-burner stove and sink. And enough height for a tall person to stand upright with the top popped.

Hey Tango,
You're quite correct. It is a replacement of the entire bed. I'll try to get more pics from the factory. I think it is worth pursuing, and maybe we'll have to get someone to loan us their Taco for a little while:sombrero:

Fwiw I don't think the Hilux and Tacoma share much when it comes to bed mounting... I could be wrong but I know there are some verifiable differences and as this likely mounts to the factory bed mounts (and likely adds more) it might be a difficult match to a US spec Tacoma.

That's good to know, Kurt. Sucks, but good to know.

I think the Tacoma frames are a fair bit 'lighter duty' compared to Hilux, I'm not 100% sure on that but its my impression having spent a bit of time under the Hilux in Aussie and far too much time under the Tacoma's here in the states. The US spec Tacoma's have frame issues with very little in the bed hence the many frame reinforcement kits available from Demello, All-Pro, Trail Gear, etc. With a true camper body on the back I think one would need to take a hard look at reinforcing the frame while the bed is off.

Very cool! And that thing is loaded!

A Jurgens Trax Camper (very similar to the Jurgens Oryx Off Road Trailer). Can be fitted to a single cab bakkie. The unit includes hot water (gas) geyser with two gas bottles, double plate stove, Basin unit with hot and cold water inside camper and shower nozzle for outside use. 40L (Engel) Freezer, Double Bed, Pop Up Roof, Two Jerry Cans, built in water tank, plenty of cupboard space, 4 x jacking (leveling) points, interior and exterior lights, side awnings etc. etc.

What is a 'bakkie' ? Like a mid size pick up?

A bakkie is a pickup truck. Doesn't matter what size; it's just a bakkie. (pronounced bucky)
We don't use the term "truck" in South Africa, unless it's a big cargo hauler/18wheeler.
What an Aussie would call a ute, we call a bakkie

That's a pretty cool body. What a great job. Gotta think that would sell in the US on a Tacoma.

In 2011, the Hilux has a metric ton of payload (990 kg, or 2178 lb). The Tacoma's payload is almost 40% smaller (615 kg or 1350 lb). That's a lot of difference, unfortunately.

You're right, Don. And Kurt. That's a pretty big difference in payload. I had no idea the Taco was so wussy:sombrero:
I'll have to check on the Trax weight, to see what it comes in at. I wonder if the Nissan Frontier has any bigger payload, since that is one of the other vehicles they put it on. One has to wonder if it is genuinely such a major payload difference or if it is just the US underrating the Taco? They're very similar in size to the Hilux. But as Kurt says, the frame is quite different.
Maybe we'll just have to start bring Hilux's in too:elkgrin:
