Hoop-la! One step closer to a Windows-less world!
Now just need some Mac ham radio programming software and my MBP would be back to all Mac, all the time.

I know you'll let us know how it is - hopefully perfect!

Typical Garmin user un-friendlyness...

You have to download a free program called Bobcat - it transfers your maps, sets up routes, finds POI's etc. Garmin makes no mention of this being required.

Downloading that now...

EDIT 40 minutes later:

OMG !!! Be sure to update your GPS and download all the latest versions of Map Installer and Bobcat. Garmin seems to be stuck in the "make it as un-fun and anti intuitive as possible" mode. Their documentation really stinks - you just have stumble upon what you need rather than being guided there.

well that's a pretty disappointing early review :(
I was hopeful it was at least not going to be any WORSE than the windows version...

I am waiting for someone to try out Route Buddy. I don't have a need for in-town navigation right now so I haven't pulled the trigger.

I'll get around to it in the next 6 months or so.

RouteBuddy review

I've been using RouteBuddy for over a year, since some really rough early releases. The new version 2.0 is a massive improvement over the previous release, bit in my opinion is still not quite ready for primetime. It is nice, but I'd consult a second trusted source for any crucial navigation.

It has fairly beefy hardware requirements. While my Mac is admittedly getting a little long in the face (iBook G4 1.33GHz, 1GB RAM), RouteBuddy is easily the slowest program I have ever run on it. They recommend at least 2GB of RAM, and I'd recommend a newer Intel processor. It is almost just as slow on my Dual G5 with 2GB memory.

The latest version seems to have the "design" of the program down, and it is stable, but there are some serious issues with routing. I've filed some very detailed bug reports with them, and I expect they will have the bugs worked out soon. Over the year or so I've been using (beta testing?) RouteBuddy, they have had many updates with each update making significant improvements. The developers and staff of the company are extremely responsive to their user community (read up on their forums), and are truly dedicated to making RouteBuddy the best navigation/mapping product for the Mac platform. With their commitment to excellence, and ability to think outside the box, I predict that within the next year RouteBuddy will be an excellent option for Mac users that have sufficient hardware.

All in!

Well, now that I have everything downloaded, maps uploaded, and have spent some time with the new interfaces, I must say that I am very happy. It is actually quite easy to use - however it takes digging to get what you need.

If you get this CN for Mac - you wont be sorry at all! Be sure to download BOBCAT from the garmin site (see link below) and that download will also have the map installer program included.

Looking forward to figuring out TOPO next... :jump:
