On the Friday, Saturday and Sunday just gone i went out to Kalbar for the weekend, which is a small country town only about an hour South - West of my home in Brisbane. The main aim of this weekend is a planning trip for our 4wd club, as we will be hosting the states 4wd Corobborree at this location in 2015. I went out Friday arvo after work on my own, and my family joined me Saturday arvo after my wife took the kids to a mate's sons birthday party. Surprisingly I had a great run in the Friday arvo traffic along Ipswich Rd and was at Kalbar and set up by 5.45p.m
KALBAR SHOWGROUND (i'm set up under the tree you can see on the left)
We (myself and another half dozen friends from the 4wd club) tried to book into the Kalbar pub for dinner, but it was booked out being a Friday night and Valentines Day and all, so we ended up in Aratula at the Aratula Hotel (about 15 minutes drive away)...the meal was great and i had a 500g rump for $23  . Got back to camp after dinner and had a few more drinks (luckily i didn't have to drive to dinner and back) whilst having the usual laughs around camp, also took some pics of the moon as it had a circle emcompassing all the way around it and looked pretty cool (freehand as i had no tripod).
CIRCLED MOON
Saturday myself and a mate (Jeff) went for a drive in his fourby up to The Governors Chair Lookout at Spicers Gap, which is in behind Moogerah Dam more or less to give an idea of where it is for those that don't know.
SPICERS GAP ROAD...easy 2wd track in dry conditions, has literally only just been graded and rolled (we passed the grader and roller parked up for the weekend)
We stopped in at the Pioneer Graves site beside the campground on the way up the drive, the campground is bone dry and unappealing other then it's complete isolation IMHO, it has heaps of small bollarded off areas also which makes it hard for camper trailer owners to set up in, though you could set up in some other areas that were there. From the carpark area it's a short walk to the cairn at the grave location.
PIONEER GRAVES
The cairn has some "inscriptions" (for want of a better term) written on it, if you look closely you'll notice it's done with nails set into the wet concrete, and the heads of the nails make up the wording of what's written. Would certainly have been a time consuming process getting those done.
Next stop up the road was Moss's Well, another very short walk was required to view it from a car park area.
Back in the fourby and we drive abit further up the road where you'll come to the last car park area at the Governors Chair Lookout. Another easy short walk is required and you'll see some spectacular views. There's a few steps to negotiate, but most of them are pictured below, on the walk from the carpark Jeff heard a noise in the grass off to the right and looked over to see an echidna making a dash for cover under a fallen tree. Jeff called me back to come look at it and we followed into the bush and tried to get as good a pic as we could, without grabbing it and disturbing it that is. Took the pics and then finished the walk up the stairs to check out the view.
GOVERNORS CHAIR LOOKOUT
THE ECHIDNA THAT TRIED TO GIVE US THE SLIP (only the second one i've ever seen in the wild)
SOME OF THE VIEW FROM THE LOOKOUT (that's a sheer cliff face at the end of those rocks in the fore ground of the first pic, slip over that and it won't end well for you)
