Kayakers in NM?

Yeah I know, it is counter-intuitive. I've seen folks kayaking down the Rio Grande and am wondering if there are any ExPo members who kayak living in New Mexico. I've been thinking I'd like to add kayaking to my back country activities and am looking for local experience.

If you ever get around the southeast hollar. Would love to take you down some runs and help get you started! Life chaging sport for me!!

You could also contact Collin he runs worldkayak.com
They have mentor programs for bringing new paddlers into the sport who just like you have no one to get started with. He is an amazing boater and a great guy!

Lots of white water folks here in NM, but I prefer flat water. I've kayaked Abiquiu a few times and I plan to kayak Vado Lake, Stinking Lake (aka Burford Lake), Heron Lake, and Cochiti next year. They have white pelicans at Stinking Lake so I want to get close enough for photographs in the yak.

I STRONGLY suggest a trip down the Rio Chama during spring runoff. It's pretty much an annual event for me and my pals. If you go prior to May 1st you do not need a permit but DO need a wet/drysuit. I am usually in an Alpacka raft, due to the ability to pack it very small for various adventures. I have heard of dudes in Alpacka rafts hitting the San Fransisco river, the Gila river, the Pecos, and of course the Rio Grande for any craft. I plan on doing the Canadian River from Springer someday. That will be an epic, dangerous run due to flood stages. Another trip I plan on doing at some point is the White Rock Canyon section of the Rio Grande from the Otawi Bridge to Cochitti Lake. A rappel off the bridge, rafting, then a hike up towards the Dome Wilderness area/camping.... sweet. I hope to get this done this summer. Can't wait for spring!!!
