Keep 2010 Ram 2500 or buy Jeep Gladiator?

I have a 2010 Dodge Ram 2500, 6.7L Cummings TRX4, 4x4 with 160,000 miles.

I am thinking about selling the truck to buy a Jeep Gladiator Rubicon. I think it will be more maneuverable off-road. But I feel like I will miss the power of the Cummings, and load carrying capacity.

What are your thoughts? What are the benefits of a full-size versus a mid-size truck for camping, outdoor use?

I had a 2014 Ram 2500 crew cab, longbed, diesel 4x4.

We now have a Gladiator.

The only thing the Gladiator does better is maneuver in tight spaces. It has less payload, less towing capacity, less power and less fuel economy.

What about waiting until the Gladiator comes out with the ecodiesel??
I think Gladiator already came out with Ecodisel. I think the MPG and torque would be nice, but I don't know about the $4k premium. Also, I would like to eventually take some trips to Mexico and other countries in Latin America, but Ultra Low Sulfur diesel are not available at least last time I was in Mexico...

Not being a fan of Jeep's offering in the last (many) years, I would stick with the Ram. If you really are set on exploring some trails where a full-size isn't going to fit, pick a different mid-size. I love running a full-size and take mine many places where people gawk at me (even on the trail, while I'm on it and passing them). It's all compromises...

Isn’t that the conundrum for a lot of folks?

Size vs capability. Gotta figure out what’s more important to you then go from there.

ie For myself, I’d like the offroad prowess of a midsize but I value cabin size (for family), cargo capacity, and comfort much more than fitting through tight rocky trails. That my family doesn’t like doing anyway. Traveling to remote backcountry camp spots with no one for miles, and doing so in comfort is priority 1. So full-size for me.

Those two are not really comparable. How big are you? I’m 6’2” 250lbs. The JL, JK platforms are ok, but I’m far from my idea of comfort in them. My seat placement makes the seat behind me useless for humans...

An easier way to look at it- what percentage of your 160k was used off road, or in need of more maneuverability (or better yet, negated you from accessing a trail)?? Compare that to how often you utilized the power, size/space/capacity, towing and comfort of your Ram.
I dare say a single towing duty where you needed your Ram monopolized more time and miles than all the times you couldn’t access a trail d/t size. Now, consider the frustration of renting/borrowing a tow rig for that/those occasions, and how many extra trips will be required d/t space/load restrictions.
Conversely, it may be worth having removable top, maneuverability, or just wanting a new rig- so far we each get to determine those priorities.
But from a function perspective only....

I sold my Gladiator Rubicon and went back to a RAM 2500 CTD. Gladiator looked good, fun to drive, and easy off-road. I did not like the power. I could definitely tell my Intech Pursue was behind me and when I went to a larger camper, I did not feel the Gladiator could give me what I wanted. If they put the Hemi in the Gladiators I’ll probably get one but my RAM is a keeper. I do have a Wrangler JL Rubicon so I still get to Jeep.

When the Gladiator came out I was ready to run down and trade the JKU until I actually saw it and found myself disappointed. It wasn’t as like the AEV pickup as I wanted. It seemed too long to me, the proportions were off and what I wanted was more of a regular cab or small extended cab. In the end I bought another Ram 1500, leaving us with the JKU and two Ram 1500s. One is a loaded Rebel (wife’s) and the other a well equipped SLT, both Crew Cabs with the 5’7” box. I may trade the Jeep and my Ram for a Power Wagon, still toying with that idea. If you have a Power Wagon keep it. If mulling between it and the Gladiator, get the Power Wagon.

About a year and a half ago, a good buddy of mine bought a new Gladiator. Initially he was very excited about getting/owning the Gladiator.

Within about six months his disillusionment with it resulted in him dumping it and getting a new Tacoma crew cab.

Thinking back, I don’t recall him ever saying anything enthusiastic about the Gladiator once he owned it. But since he’s gotten the Taco, he’s raved about it and more importantly, he seems to be getting out and driving it on local USFS roads much more frequently than he ever used the Gladiator, FWIW.

I had a Taco before the Gladiator. That was a nice truck, just didn’t have any power. It was one of the most comfortable trucks I’ve owned. I would like to have another just to get around in.

I strongly considered a Gladiator before I bought my 2500. I liked it a lot, but that the end of the day it was too limiting for us. I’m not a rock crawler and most of my off road adventures are on old forest roads that have turned into trails from neglect. Even with a long bed crew cab it’s been fine.
