Check out the Scott Scale, available in 20" or 24", my 7 year is rocking a new 24" and I found it to be lighter, better quality, and componentry than the Specialized, Kona, or Gary Fisher bikes that I checked out.

I got my son a Specialized hardrock. It is heavier than the Scott but has been a great bike. Lighter weight than the Gary Fisher, REI/Novara's and Giant. The Scott was my first choice but I found a great deal on the Specialized. Great to see kids on a mtn. bike.

Where are you from, and how hilly is it? I'm a big single speeder/fixxie guy (haven't own a geared bike for years). When I shopped for bikes for my girls, I ended up standardizing on lightweight Redline BMX bikes. They're simple and light (we're on the 3rd Redline now). Granted, we're in Michigan, where it's not super hilly.

I was disgusted by the weight of a couple of the name brand (e.g. - Trek) geared kid-sized MTBs...they seemed to weigh almost as much as an adult MTB.

Just my $0.02.

Sorry for the late reply but i am in central alabama and was trying to find a light bike for my 5 year old twins. Not very hilly were i am at but would still like to have a couple of gear options.

D'ango_60, how does he ride a 24"? He's bigger than my oldest 6yo but he's just about perfect on a 16" but can't see him in anything bigger than an 18" now, 20" at the very extent.

Are you talking about frame or wheel size? It fits him really well, I actually considered going with a 26" wheel on a small womens frame but there would have been pushback on the pink frames...

Your brother rode Horse Gulch with him a couple of weekends ago, he'll attest that Simon can handle that size bike without an issue.

Yes I am. I can't imagine that Cole would be riding anything smaller than a 20". In fact, Lucy is about to get a great little Kona Makena 20" later this month for her 5th birthday. I hope to have her riding a few stretches of white rim in early June.

Nope, Cole's on a 16" tire now and fits him quite well. I've taken the approach with the 3 of them kind of like off-road tires: resist the urge to oversize. I'm considering him an 18 | 20 tire but I can't imagine him on something a whole 'lot bigger. I'd just like to find him a multi-gear 20".

I'll second a previous posters recommendation concerning Redline BMX bikes. My 3 year old rides a Redline Pitboss (16" tires) and he can negotiate some small hills with it. My 6 year old also rides a Redline BMX bike, Proline Mini (20" tires) and hasn't had any problems with some pretty decent size hills. The benefit of these bikes are simplicity, good gearing and lightweight. Both weigh in around the 15lb mark.

My 9 year old son rides a 20" Specialized Hard Rock. It's a good little bike that has helped him understand how to shift gears. It's a little heavy, but not bad. I highly recommend it.
