I am trying to find out what year is my old Klein Rascal. All I can find is a Number on the drop out and I think it is T6A96. I have been researching but nothing comes up on the net but newer different style serial number, I believe I purchased in the late 80's not sure to long ago.

Looking at some of the components, they're all consistent with about 1990-1991. The fork appears to be a Specialized Future Shock from about 1991. That, in conjunction with the Zoom seatpost, Control Tech stem, and I'm guessing Dia Compe brake levers make me think it's from 1991ish. Even the quick release skewers look like either Zoom, Ringle or similar levers from that era.

Cool bike. What kind of headset is that? Almost looks like a Campagnolo Euclid headset??

I had the serial number wrong it it TGA96 which would be the Top Gun frame from the 89-90's. I just bought the frame and pieced all the parts together and Flounder you had all the parts correct. The head set is a Stronglight and the brakes are Dia compe 986 with XT running gear. I guess Klein at the time had a problem with the Top Gun name from the movie so they had to change over to the Rascal name. When I had some warranty work Done for the seat tube they repainted the whole frame and put on the newer Rascal stickers. The frame is the same between the 2 names but the paint job was much different on the top gun.

The Top Gun was only produced in 1989, and being pre-suspension, was paired with a uni-crown steel fork. I think it was a Tange fork.

They were also sold complete with the Klein Mission Control bar/stem combo. I had one of those fail on me mid-downhill in Winter Park, Co. Not pretty.
