Starting to freeze over. These were from today (12/26) at Grand Island Landing. Looks warm, no?

Snowmobiled into Miners Beach today (well, to the parking area and hiked in through the snow ).

This last storm had some crazy waves, they had already died way down today.

And the waves definitely beat the beach up-

We're not quite as frozen but Huron's getting there. By the weekend, with this cold now firmly settled in, we should have some good ice building up along the lake.

These were from this morning.

Of course most of our ponds and small lakes are frozen solid, which is great, tis the season,... for pond hockey!

We have had some ice floating past us on the North Shore. But to many big storms for any to stay along the shore. The winter is yet young.

Here is one from last winter.

Trevor, I'd like to learn more about how you took this shot. How high off the ground is the camera? Are you on a tripod, or positioned on a rock, or is this handheld? Is this HDR, or a single, perfect exposure? What lens size did you shoot at?

If it's on a rock: damn. Nice work. :D

I wouldn't say HDR either (I'm not seeing the range?). The lens...within a 10-22..at least the left side looks like it's 'wide'?
From the Canadian thing I'm thinking late evening too? Oh, and less than 8" off the ground. :)

(sorry, I really like looking at pics and wondering the same thing...and his Smugmug is locked down for info :) !
Awesome shots BTW ;) VERY amazing pictures.
Just don't say you shoot with a 40d because it would make realize how much I do not know about photography.

^Pretty close, thanks guys.

Tripod mounted, about 2" off the ground and I want to say about a foot or so away from the ice. Single exposure using a 2 stop hard grad. 20mm lens on a FF cam. Taken at about 7:30 am, 20-30 minutes before sunrise. Not sure of the exact shooting details, I'd have to check the original RAW file. I was shooting between ISO 500-800 I believe. At that distance from the ice I'm going to say the aperture was around F16, much more than that and diffraction pretty much kills any additional benefit you'd see trying to gain added DoF anyway. Release time was probably 2-4 seconds. I was looking for enough time to blur the movment of the water, but I also wanted enough speed so not to have the ship off in the distance turn into a light streak. I think that's it.

Haha..cool. I tried. Still confused about the morning vs. evening part but :D

Took these today, ice is in the bay and the first rounds of "brave" men are heading out.

I've fished in some cold weather, but with the wind today I really don't know how they lasted more than 5 minutes.
