Land Rover Aluminum Wheels vs Steel Wheels

Sorry, you are right. My mind read you wanted the tubeless part number.

I'd be interested to see if there is any actual difference in the rims.

Personally, I would not run tubes. The quality of tubes these days is horrid.

Usually the tube type do not have the inner lip to hold the bead on. I haven't been able to locate Michelin Airstop tubes in the U.S. at all.

Okay. But why would you not want the safety bead, even with tubes?

The tube itself holds the air so the tire staying on the rim for a seal is not so important I guess. I see your logic though. If the tube loses air, what's keeping the tire on the bead then?

It should be better for holding a bead. Also when you tube dies you can stick in a 50 cent tubeless valve and keep going.

Alloy hub cap clearance.

Got a 1989 Defender90, and bought the 5 Star Aluminum Defender wheels to replace the steel ones. I think they are P/N 17243. They look great! Got the Goodyear 265 75 16 tires. The problem is I can not get the hub caps on, because the wheel hub grease cap sticks out too far. Do I get the 1.5" spacers? Is there a special grease cover? Do I need the Discovery axels? Anyone else have this issue? I see pictures of these wheels on Defenders a lot, but can not find out how to cap them! Thanks, Mark

I ran into this on my 90 and ran the 1.5" spacers. Problem solved

Just don't run the center caps if you're married to those alloys.

I'm no fan of spacers, particularly if you aren't increasing offset to compensate for significant lift. Spacers would be a complicated and bothersome mechanical solution to what is largely an aesthetic problem.
