Land Rover comes through for my RRC LWB

Some of you may have read my past comments on how I feel LR doesn't support the older vehicles and while many parts are NLA, the company really supported me today.

I had been noticing lately smelling gas fumes when filling the tank and had recently read on another site about an old RRC / Disco gas tank recall campaign where this was a sympton of a bad tank.

Called LRNA, provided my VIN number, and sure enough the tank had not been replaced under the recall.

LRNA told me no problem, bring the Rover to a dealer, and a new tank will be installed.

However, I'm living in Switzerland and the RRC is here with me - the LRNA person wasn't sure how to answer that and suggested calling LR Corporate in GB.

Before doing so, I contacted my dealer here, which actually is in Liechtenstein, and explained the situation.

They contacted LR Switzerland, region level, who contacted LR Corporate in GB to determine what could be done.

LR Corporate gave the ok to replace my tank by the Liechtenstein dealer at LR cost!

To say the least I am overly impressed and feel LR has really shown that indeed it does take customer service seriously.

On a side note, when checking my VIN, LRNA, LR Switzerland, and LR Corporate database all list my vehicle as MY1995.

This is quite odd as the build date is 10/93 and it has the '94 dash without airbags so it is strange.

My contact at LR Liechtenstein just tells me it is a "very special" Land Rover.

Just a great Rover day and makes me even more proud to own one.

Thanks for looking at my post, yet, seriously what kind of remark is that?

As an update, the new tank has been shipped to the dealer and is now in stock.

Maintenance is actually scheduled for 26APR2015 or tomorrow.

However from side, I severed my Anchilles tendon while in Budapest last week and just had surgery.

BTW, I do have pics of the hospital room, etc......

So I can't drive for about 8 weeks. The dealer is close and possibly can pick it for me.

Will update as the work progresses - maybe even take a pic of the new tank for my doubting Thomas from AL.

Blueboy: Pics or it didn't happen is a US saying meaning ... hey ... we want to see pics of your truck!

He meant no harm or foul.

Haha,

The "very special" comment probably means it spent the first year of it's life going through multiple levels of post assembly line repair/rebuild before it would pass Quality Control.

Sometimes by law manufacturers have to fix recalls, its nothing special. Especially if fuel related, then it is a big liability.

I got a call in 1996 regarding my 1986 300 ZX. They were replacing fuel lines on all 1986 Z.

I asked why and they said although listed as a maintenance item, no one replaced them so they were doing all fuel lines under recall.

Well it is a LR, most likely it caught on fire or exploded and they replaced the damaged parts and dash with parts from older models. :)

Yep totally agree, however, I'm living in Switzerland and it is a U.S. recall. Work now scheduled for 10JUN2015.

Hmph. My Disco has the fuel tank recall and it apparently was never done according to the NHSTA site. I haven't worried about it.

Really, it does not matter where the vehicle is. You say that they are coming through for you but really they are covering their ***.

I am not too sure about that. As an example, my work colleague purchased a new VW Tourareg in the U.S. and brought it back to Switzerland with him when returning to Europe. His U.S. warranty was not valid in Switzerland. Point being what is valid in the U.S. doesn't necessarily transfer to other parts of the world especially U.S. government decrees.

Warranty is a cost to auto companies. So they will avoid. Just like lawsuits are also. Warranty repair != recall repair. Plus this is fuel related. If something bad happened as a result of not performing a recall when the owner requested the recall to be performed you would have a very viable lawsuit which lrna wishes to avoid. They ARE covering themselves not doing you some amazing service. Sorry.

Again, not trying to beat a dead horse, LRNA is not involved as I'm in Switzerland. Totally agree with you if I were living in the U.S. and brought this to a U.S. dealer. However, not sure if this is true here in Europe. In any case, the tank will be replaced and the Rover will be in better shape as a result.

Well, it seems that LRNA was involved by your first post.

Recalls happen quite often and if there is a recall made, most countries and definitely the US require that action be taken free of charge.

I would be amazed if there are not similar laws in many European countries. But it's not like I have easy access to Swiss laws. I would actually think that many Euro laws might be more strict on the mfg recall process after all many recalls are made because they can result in personal and property damage.

Fact is the recall is made by the manufacturer and therefore they are obligated to fix.

In US there are definitely federal laws requiring that recall repair, replace, refund is FREE and you are also entitled to compensation if property or person is damaged. But that is above and beyond fixing the recall alone.
