I read that too, in some online article. Sounds absurd - someone swerved into this guy, and he went out on control; then decides to sue Land Rover because they've got deeper pockets than the guy that hit him.

I've rolled a Range Rover. It took a lot of effort and I wouldn't blame Rover - and I was impressed enough with the structural integrity I've owned several more since. I'd still be driving that one if the rollover (and subsequent starting the engine without blowing out the oil) hadn't caused a thrown rod.

Gotta find someone to blame, I guess.

What? The 16 year old, Lusis, that sideswipes Pannu gets away with 5% liability and Land Rover gets to cover the rest? Um, something is wrong here.

If the 16 year old killed Pannu, as in manslaughter, who gets in trouble then? 5% Lusis still and 95% Land Rover?

By the way, I hate lawyers. And cases like these continue to perpetuate my hate towards lawyers.

im sure liability limits came into play on the 5/95% thing. i think the minimum limits in ga. are 25k. i run a light and total your new range rover, my ins. gives you 25k, yours pays the rest, or sue me but guess what, im worth nothing. plus remember that just because someone gets "awarded" a sum doesnt mean they actuall will see it. the sad part of all these type of suits is that it costs alot of money to defend yourself from someone elses mistakes.

I'm glad I live in a socialist country. This kinda stuff just gets thrown out. No, it doesn't even get thrown out, no judge will even hear it. It's just too bad so many businesses and insurance companies point to cases down in the US as examples of "liability concerns" to restrict our freedoms or charge us extra up here.

I have always wondered that. The pilliars on D1's and D2's do not look very thick.

This smacks to me of protectionism - the authorities want to scare Americans off from buying foreign vehicles to encourage them to buy US built vehicles and prop up the sinking industry. The courts will often act politically in these sorts of cases, just like they do over here.

I doubt the judge was thinking on that level in this case. The judge was likely taking the money for the pain and suffering from the biggest pockets he could find, because after all, auto manufacturers are loaded.
