Not sure how many have tried Landjäger, another pre-refrigeration dried meat staple similar to beef jerky of the sausage world. The plus of landjäger is that one can leave it unrefrigerated for months and still use it to make excellent meals. First used by the mounted forest rangers of Bavaria for centuries and the staple protein source for the German army and wartime populace for a number of years this stuff makes awesome meals, boiled and then added in to dishes or fried up as as a side dish.
The bad thing about landjäger is that it's so good it needs to be kept under lock and key if anyone starts drinking beer nearby.
