LED Headlights

I do a little bit of board level electronics work as a hobby, and I've made LED lightbulbs out of old dead CLF light bulbs (I break the glass part off then take the flat plastic base off and pull the circuit board off, then make my own board with LEDs on it and a little mylar capacitor and resistor, then glue the board onto the screw base of the CFL), so I wonder how hard it would be to source some high intensity LEDs and make some sort of reflector or lens or something to get them roughly equivalent to these. $1000 is pretty steep for one set of headlights especially when there is probably only a couple bucks worth of parts and labor involved in manufacturing them. I've even contemplated making my own LED lights similar to the Rigid Industries LED light bars, but make them out of cheaply acquired LED trouble lights found at any Home Depot or Lowes.
