Having owned both a cab height and raised height shell I say go for the raised height version, that extra 6-8 inches makes a world of difference when sleeping or packing gear in the back. And spend the extra little bit to find one lined/insulated with the marine style carpet for warmth and sound deadening.

I also vote for the extra height. I spend a lot of time getting in and out of my topper be it on trips with the kids or getting tools for work.
I went with an ARE MX topper. Had some issues with the first one, but the second is going strong with some hard wheeling.
Mine is of course a long bed.

That's probably what I'd go with when I chuck the popup. Nice rig!
2008 Dodge Power Wagon-G-56 manual-stock height-Helwigg Load Pro 35's-Custom A.R.E. MX series cap (For Overlanding/retirement)- Home made beds lide that works AWESOME-to carry 3 extra 20 lb propane tanks-2 ARB Fridge/Freezers-82 qt & a 50 qt-folding tables & chairs underneath-etc., etc. . Pulling our 2016 AR One Extreme 18 QB travel trailer. No hard core off-road........just off the beaten path.
Driver side toolbox w/4' LED light strip.
Pass thru pass side "windoor." 4' & rear LED lights. Clothes hanger. I ordered it with solid-body colored side & rear windows to keep prying eyes off our stuff.
What you see in the D/S front of bed is some 2/0 Ga Welding cable with lugs for my dual battery set up. (I had it in the WeatherGaurd tool box before the cap) I will eventually put it back in.
It is tied down to the front bed tie downs with turn buckles. It does not tip. I have had 500+ lbs in it & can still easily roll it in & out with one hand. Total cost around $3-400 I guess. I have since weather proofed the wood.

I own both and could go either way. Having the barn doors sealed the deal for me on the Outback cab high or I would have went higher. Higher is nice when climbing in and out though. Snugtop does make reinforced roofs as an option. I am going to add the Rhino rack to the cab high with a rear awning which will work great and give good coverage with doors open and awning overhead. Snugtop is a great top.

man that huge drop hitch sure looks like a shin banger without a tailgate to keep you away from it, awesome truck though

Having owned 5 different trucks with caps on them my advice would be the raised height caps. They are much easier to live with. From the sound of your previous truck and use you plan on spending a good amount of time in it so function would have to win over fashion. The power wagon on page 1 of this thread isn't giving up any style points with the raised height, thing is sexy.

I had MANY people tell me this exact thing. I am sure glad i inquired about it before i bought mine. I know 5-6" does not seem like much, but the little extra height is worth it's weight in gold. I am SO GLAD i got the MX series with the extra height.

I pulled the trigger on an ARE V series with the required options (Carpet liner, Win-doors, dual rope light and sliding front window). I went with the cab high for a few reasons
1) The mileage on the power wagons is already less than awesome.
2) The MX costs about $500 more
3) My truck is already ~6'6" high and am concerned about anything higher for garages and what not
4) I am going to put racks on it so in reality, we are talking about a 10-12" higher than cab height
If I really hate it, I might give the EZ Topper lift a try. EZ Topper lift + Cab height topper really seems like the best of all worlds. I'm not worried about not having enough room as that was never an issue even with the 5"7" bed on my prior truck and cab high topper.

Well....with all that rationalization above, I said screw it and and called them back.
I NOW have an ARE MX topper on order. Same options of carpet, vented win-doors, rails, dual LED lights and sliding front window.
