Great read. Thanks for posting it.

Sadly it really does hit the mark. I now have a nice Canon 50D with quality lenses. But that evil little voice in the back of my head is already starting to mumble something about full frame sensors.

I hope to keep a muzzle on that voice for at least a couple more years.

I skipped quite a few of those steps by starting with a 35mm SLR. I have very little use for a prime lens although I carry one (50mm) about 20% of the time. Shooting a lot of landscapes and animals, I prefer a wide zoom and a tele zoom in fixed focal. I can say that I have related to the desire of a bigger camera but I can safely say that i like the camera I have, it has served me very well, although my next camera body buy will be a full frame.

Yup similar situation for me. Went from cheaping fuji p&s to slightly better p&s to a 'prosumer' olympus p&s to a D70 w/ the lowly 28-300 Tamron. Those have all been retired. Now I shoot a D300 & all my lenses are fast 2.8 apertures with the exception of my 12-24 f/4 (purchased before the Nikkor 14-24 f/2.8 was offered).

As for full frame sensors, I honestly have no intent on getting a full frame camera. I'm shooting macro and motor sport as a passion so for me there's greater benefit in having the crop factor of a smaller sensor. Although if they can offer a clean high MP fast shooting sensor (8fps) then perhaps the greater ability to crop to zoom will make them worthwhile.

I do occasionally shoo Portraits & Landscapes (where full frame could be a benefit) but these are usually done ad-hoc as events occur and are not really a passion for me. If I really wanted it, I'd just go to the local pro shop and rent a pro body for a weekend.:sombrero:

I haven´t made the move to a DSLR but I did spend way to much time reading all the info I could Google up. I ended going backwards. I had a Panasonic Lumix FZ7 which I pretty much destroyed during the November 2009 Baja 1000. I was going to replace the FZ7 with a DSLR but went into information overload and instead picked up a 2005 Lumix FZ20 that was almost brand new. It is a 5mp beast compared to my old FZ7. Has a 12 x zoom (36-432) that is F2.8 throughout the full zoom and a hot shoe for an external flash. For 120 bucks I couldn´t pass it up. The Baja 500 is next Saturday(June 5,2010) and the race is coming through Erendira again and have found my set up spot. Will post photos next week taken with the FZ20 and as usual after the race I will be back on the net looking once again for the DSLR I should have had with me.

Wow, it's eerie just how close I have followed that progression, even the timeline. June 07 I bought my first DSLR for our trip east through Newfoundland & Labrador. I started with a D40 and the kit 18-55. It'll be three years June since that first purchase and now here I am shooting with a D700 and a few primes the majority of time. Crazy! The only real deviation to Mike's summation that I took, is along the way I managed to pick up a Holga and a F100, both of which I still use though when I'm craving for something more tangible then pixels.
