Life with a Chevy powered Discovery 1

So I'm sure some of you saw the FS listing for the Sand Glow yellow Chevy powered Discovery 1 that had been floating around the classified section for a period of time. Well, I'm the "lucky" guy who bought it. There's an old saying that goes "You get what you pay for" and that certainly stands true here. Considering in 2010 it was originally posted for 9K, and when I bought it on 1-24-15 for less than half that, I thought I made out like a bandit.... In the beginning I was certainly sold on the truck for the number of mods and upgrades it had done versus the price it was listed at. I had the Camel Trophy fantasies we all dream of, but in reality it's been more headache than overall winner of Kalimantan 96.

When I bought it, it was located in Houston Texas. I was unable to drive it back myself (work commitment) so I sold a buddy on the idea of flying down and driving it back for me. Here it is when he picked it up.

In route back to Park City, Utah where it now lives.

This was a very very common sight over the first two months of ownership.
It first dropped two cylinders on its trip from Houston, which ended up being dead fuel injectors. In week one the clutch master cylinder and the clutch slave cylinder both blew out and had to be replaced. The panhard bar bushings were completely shot and those also had to be replaced before I could do an alignment.
IMG_1736.jpg
When I went to do an alignment I noticed that the steering stabilizer was hastily welded onto the drag link instead of using a u-bolt. So for now straightening the steering wheel is done one full turn at a time....
IMG_4124.jpg
A day after the alignment my LR OME shock broke. I guess this might have been a blessing as both rear shocks had ZERO dampening left in them. They were both blown. (still week 1)

The radiator fans never worked so a coworker rewired the whole system for me. Which is only the start to a lot of rewiring this truck needs. I just don't feel safe really getting into the back country with this truck the way the wiring is on it right now. There is a lot of extra wire and a lot of unnecessary and unsafe power and ground connections.
IMG_8518.jpgIMG_0721.jpg
The "New exhaust system from the Y-Pipe back" is really a bunch of NAPA press bends bubble gummed together and rooted ridiculously low under the truck. The drivers side of the Y-Pipe actually sits ON the Anti-Roll bar.
IMG_8004.jpgIMG_8006.jpg
I don't have pictures of these repairs. But I also pulled and resealed the front windscreen as 3/4th of the top and all of the drivers side of the front winscreen was completely unsealed. The windscreen guy told me "This is the most unsafe window I've ever seen."
The right side rear window also came off its track on the way home so I spent a little time repairing that. Both front headlights have burnt out and been replaced. The RF blinker has never worked and still does not work, I need to invest some time to find the wiring fault deep inside the loom somewhere.
And best of all so far. At roughly 3:30pm MST today 3/24/15 (exactly 2 months from when I took ownership) the gearbox lost 5th gear and with that it also lost reverse. So I'm currently scrambling to find a R-380 gearbox or the specialty tools I need to rebuild it myself. :ar15:

That's a lot of complaining for one post so I'll fill you guys in on the fun times with the truck.
After receiving the truck I pulled the Hannibal rack and repainted it. I also built a nice light rack on the front (formally the back) of the rack. (I don't care if you don't like the rack being backwards)

I also made some nice limb risers for it.

I got rid of the stock wheels for some black steelies

We have gone on some adventures as well.
Cruised around Arches National Park in Moab

More recently I've finished off the roof rack and found some more trail time with friends.
I prefer the RTT to be off the back of the truck. That is part of the reason the Roof Rack is mounted backwards.

I finally put the lights on the Roof rack and continued to try and enjoy the Discovery on some of the roads around Park City. My coworker Ron (Roncar) will appear in a lot of my pictures. He's the one that took almost all of the quality photos and he's also the pilot of the 04 Disco2 seen in some of these shots.

Last weekend we went out to the desert west of Salt Lake City and enjoyed some trail time and some hotdogs over an open fire.

I love it! I remember reading about the Disco 1 camel trophies back in 1994/1995.

I ended up going the Disco II route and every day behind the wheel is like fulfilling a childhood dream..

I second that. I am always looking for more Landies to add to the crew and shoot. More vehicles = more epic photos!

Ouch, sounds like a lot of work for a dream car!

But I know how it goes, I had a 2001 DII that I loved dearly until it decided to fall apart at every possible weak point. Still though, it looks like you've got an awfully cool truck to go running around in! I'm excited to see where you take it. It sure looks damned cool, that's for sure!

Cheers

Been seeing some of these pics pop up on instagram. That truck did seem a bit too good to be true, but it looks like it just needs some little things here and there (besides the trans...) Good luck with it.

As always, super jealous of your guys in the SW. I'll be back there... one day. If gas prices stay this low maybe even with my Disco.

I keep telling myself that. I'd really like to move forward with fixing the things that are wrong with the truck and improving on it a bit. But things like the transmission and a periodic misfire keep coming up and taking precedence over the rest of my to-do list.

Must be the Landy blood taking over that Chevy heart. Ha. Those 4.3s are usually pretty trouble-free. It's a nice looking rig though, and probably pretty rust free, so it's worth it. They only imported something like 55,000 Discos from 94-99; Jeep sells around that many Wranglers in four months of any given year. Tdi swap kits are something like 4 grand with a motor and trans.

Well, it may be a mess, but once it is done, you'll be abe to fix anything in the field.

Do not feel too badly, I have done the same thing if it was for sale near me.

And, for the record, it is still a cool truck.

Kinda hate to post this, but I flew out to drive this rig home to NC. However, the death wobble on test drive reloy got me. From there I inspected much closer, and decided to pass and flew back home. I have bought many many vehicles over the years, and that was the first time I had to fly home empty handed.

Given plenty of time and dollars, it can become a reliable rig as well as the looker you want it to be.

Lastly, feel free to contact me if interested in my spare Disco R380. Good luck with her, and stay the course...
