+1 - I've often thought about what a part-time electric assist could look like in a simple offroad trailer, with a tiny amount of short duration high torque propulsion just so the trailer could get unstuck or keep from bogging the tow vehicle to a stop on obstacles. Some kind of solid axle with integrated motors that could freewheel or disengage to avoid drag, like this:

I’d considered it as well, the classic Land Rovers have notoriously weak rear axle shafts and diffs, and the F/R diffs are the same drop out 3rd members.

My thought was to use the whole rear axle to carry the spare parts, they also have a driveline mounted parking brake which would be handy to use. This led to the idea of mounting a flex plate and starter motor to the parking brake assembly, which could be “bumped” via the aux pin on a 7 way trailer connector and a momentary dash switch.

Obviously it would turn at a constant speed, but in slippery conditions like climbing over a wet log I don’t think it would be a problem.

Is there any concern with pushing from a single point in the rear of the tow vehicle, especially in loose or slippery conditions?
Standard ball hitch? Load leveling hitch?

Ditto... I've also thought a starter motor that would fully disengage would be ideal- tons of torque for just a few seconds. I love the idea of also using this to carry a 100% complete axle, suspension, etc. for the tow vehicle.
