lightweight trailer build thread

I've been working on this for a few years but need to get it done this week for vacation. I'm trying to use up materials I have around while keeping the trailer light enough for a fully laden 4 cylinder wrangler. Basically started with a angle iron utility trailer cut down to size, 44x60. changed to 3500 lb axle wide enough for 31x10.5 to match the jeep. I welded flat 2x2 to the 2x2 angle in an attempt to make a channel frame stiffer than the angle (had the 2x2 bar on hand) Everything is 1/8 thickness.

I had a box made up by a HVAC shop in 18g because I can't weld sheet metal. It's 20"deep. In retrospect this was a difficult way to do it because it's hard to make the dimensions match up without a proper metal shop. I'm off an eighth inch here and there. Also I intended to glue the rim of the box to the tubing frame but I can't get get access to it easily.

I posted this in another thread:
I have to get a 2x2 receiver on the tongue (for use with an extension and different couplers). I was trying to decide how to attach it and was thinking of notching the 2x3 tongue and inserting the 2" high section into the receiver tube:

Now I think I may be best off just welding it to the top of the receiver, although that screws up the perfect coupler height that matches the Jeep hitch.

Mine has the receiver unit on a smaller box tube that slides inside the 2 1/2" box tongue that fits tight, the insert goes in about 18" before the receiver butts up against the tongue and about 12" back I put a pen through both tubes and lock it. One receiver is for a ball hitch another for the tractor. The receivers are welded on the tubes that slide inside. Very similar to yours but mine tilts and an adjustable 3 position ramp at the back which usually stays down extending the trailer straight back.
