woods,
Not really. The two that were riding the 'real' fat bikes were running 9 pounds of air, perfect for sand dunes and deep snow (none found here). The effort increase on hard surface dirt is completely offset with the ease of riding over miles and miles of blow sand. I've revised my guess at the expenditure of energy of each of those die-hards up to 10,000 calories a day. I know this by the voracious appetite they displayed in eating supper each night at camp. There is no way to do this 3-day trip on a bike without some kind of support. They all had camelbacks, which they had to fill 3-4 times a day just to keep going. I have a little spigot on the back of the Lance as a drain, but it works just as well filling 16 camelbacks over the road. My son-in-law Shon was the one with the skinnier tires, slightly aired down who is a class2 cyclist on road/crossover/mountain bike platforms and could probably have done the whole road in one long day with support. This was a whacky trip. I was happy to drive one of the sag wagons and be the chef-du-camp for the boys.
regards, as always, jefe
