Little Guy Trailer

I've decided I'll need a trailer and after much research, have decided to go with the Little Guy trailer. Was just wondering if anyone had any experience with those trailers. www.golittleguy.com

Yes, that's where I first saw one.

I'm currently in contact with them for some minor modifications to be made. The one I'm getting is the 4 foot platform trailer. However, I'm trying to get it about 8" longer. It will have skid plates and air conditioning. I'm also trying to get it to fit 35" or 37" tires (I'm running 40" tires on my Jeep).

HAHAHAHA...very true.

I'm supplying the wheels & tires, so that will cut the cost to them a little bit. I want it to match my Jeep, so the trailer will have bead locked wheels and KM2's. It's a FANTASTIC trailer...just needs to be a little bit longer so I can mount my Engle refrigerator in there and still lay down comfortably.

They have a package you can buy for the 5- and 6-foot wide models that includes skid plates, which I think is pretty cool. But, I want to have that package on a 4-foot wide model.

Here's what I'll be towing it with...

Thanks, looks like you have a capable rig yourself.

I'll be doing a LOT of rock crawling, so I've built the Jeep up quite a bit. While I won't be doing much wheeling with the trailer, I do want to take it down some of the easier trails.

Since I'll be camping for 6 months straight next year, I think the trailer is going to be a better choice than the roof top tent in the picture above (which has since been sold).

Hey Ric...I've been on this site a while...but generally stay on the "Jeep" part of the forum. :) This site is awesome though.

I really like tear drop trailers, and these look really nice. My only reservation is the use of the torsion axle.

I think that even with mild use on wash board they can be problematic, and many manufactures of torsion axles now recommend that they be used on road only.

Have a read of the suspension article I wrote http://www.adventuretrailers.com/suspension.html it covers torsion axles about half the way down.

You may be better off going with a Tear Drop with conventional leaf springs.

I once had a 4x8 tear drop. I come to find it to be a little cramped for 2 people when sleeping. We would load up to go wheeling and camping, every time, the TD was packed, we couldn't use the bedding. You place your stuff on the bedding. When you setup camp, it isn't too bad. But when you break down, you may do this in the morning with the dew. So you have to wipe down before storing or have a wet bed which you have to air dry at home or before you next destination.

If you are having the TD mod'd, why not look at having it placed on a raised platform. The platform, ofter referred to as a basement if there was a trap door to it from the inside, would hold your other camping gear. You can keep your personals inside on the bedding, or provide a way of hanging then inside. The basement would hold your tables, chairs, awnings, kitchen equipment, cooler, etc.
If you are looking at the Little Guy, there really isn't a separate kitchen with a bulkhead between the interior. The kitchen consists of a counter top and couple of cabinets. This is basically what I had. There really isn't much room to store the cooking and cleaning equipment, let alone a cooler for your food and drink.

Think of the TD as a Adventure trailer. The bedding is separate and remains separate from the storage requirement of your camping equipment. Do the same with the sleeping area being rigid like that of the TD. You'll need places to store your camping equipement.

Martyn...thanks for the link. I'll take a look at the article. I may be changing axels on the trailer due to the wheels/tires I'm looking to put on...still have to figure that out.

Jagular7...I really like that idea about a basement! That would be perfect for chairs, a fold-out table, and other things that I wouldn't want to store in the sleeping area.

I won't need a cooler under there. I have a refrigerator that I plan on either mounting between the rear bucket seats in the Jeep or in the trailer (by cutting out a portion of the table thing it has in the back and dropping it in that space). The cabinets will be good for storing canned food, bread, etc.

Just a note about the bed...it's a tri-fold mattress, so I could put stuff in the rear if I had to (by folding the mattress a little) and not put it directly on the bed.

Though mine was a Pleasant Valley version of the 4x8, here are some pics to let you visualize the size and design. Though the rear portion is a flat rear door, the Little Guy will be more of a turtleback with little more room. I couldn't pack a grille on top of the shelf door and close the rear door.

Got be careful of putting that refrigerator in the 'shelf' in the back. Below it is your feet.

Getting a square face will give you a square inside. I had the rolled face and it rolled inside.

Packed for a long weekend at Camp Jeep in 2006 with 2 kids and a Jeep.

The basement idea came from another camper forum I'm on. They use it as a way of stepping into the camper near the entrance door and since it extends more under the floor, its used for storage.
To add about the axle, look at the tongue. You may want to add some triangulation support to the single post tongue.

Thanks for the pix Mike.

I'm going with the flat front because I will have a somewhat large platform on the other side of it for the spare tire, a/c and a small Honda generator.

I know the refrigerator will interfere with my feet, however, that is why I'm getting it lengthened a bit. Also, the refrigerator won't go all the way from one side to the other (won't even go 1/2 way across), so I'll still have plenty of room.

I'll be contacting the company today to tell them about the storage area underneath and see if it's possible...can't see why it wouldn't be though.

Lil' Rough Rider

This truly is a first in the recreational vehicle industry: a camper that can be taken off-road, just about anywhere that your 4-wheel drive can go.

 Little late to the party there, eh?

The Rough Rider package is the one that comes with skid plates and such. But, it's only available on the 5-foot and 6-foot models. I want a 4-foot wide model, so I'm seeing what they can do about that.

I heard back from them about the underneath storage area. They don't feel they will be able to do that given the time limit and with how busy they are filling current orders (about 2 months to get one). Therefore, I may just get the standard model and have Brad (Overbuilt Customs) modify that. He's really talented and probably won't have a problem doing so...will have to check with him on that.
