LJ rear storage

I just wanted to say thanks for all the ideas I have had from the Portal. I have been traveling around our country for 20+ years and really look forward to all your different ways of living on the road..I seem to enjoy this lifestyle more than anything else these days……

In 2004 we bought a Jeep LJ, threw our camping stuff on top of two storage boxes and went overlanding in Moab and Colorado for 17 days. We had almost no organization in the back of the Jeep, and digging through the “Pile” in 100 deg temps really affected the days enjoyment. Sometime after that trip I found the Portal and the rest is history. After this seasons camping trips, it looks like everything has pretty much found its place. So I thought I would share some pic's and maybe return some ideas in the process.

I did not plan the layout from scratch but have redesigned things a few times since 2004, mostly due to the rollcage or soft top security. I did end up with a pretty flat surface on top of the whole rear area that will allow big items in a pinch, and gives the ability to see out the back window somewhat. The only thing on top of the box is our double sleeping pad, otherwise everything has it's own location and is sealed for trail dust. All gear needed to set up camp is easy to reach from outside of the Jeep. Our clothes and camera gear are sealed in the front facing big Tuffy box, and can be accessed while underway. I keep my Pelican's and heavy dirty stuff under the big box in a lockable 8” tall storage area, it covers most of the rear floor. The rear facing 4 drawer Geneva toolbox when opened, will clear the soft top rear window bottom, so cold muddy zippers stay untouched. There is also a switch panel built into that tool boxes mount along the sidewall with a couple of 12V outlets ….

I added aluminum plate from the sides of the Tuffy box to the body this year. Now I have some fairly well sealed odd shaped storage behind the front seats along the rear wheelwells. I did add some Bling from race trailers, the holders store my oil and propane in the drivers side aluminum plate. A PETT potty kit fits on the passenger side aluminum plate, along with other stuff. I used aluminum air hose hangers mounted on the rollbar to hold my Kelty sunshade and Paha que potty tent out of the way of an opening Tuffy box lid, (sunshade goes in Jeep last, after everything else is loaded rain or shine). The rear aluminum lockbox on top of my old Geneva toolbox is new this year and seals 100%. I use the small Pelican for my dry food or put the food in the aluminum lockbox in bear country……..

We enjoy making camp now, and did not before we really organized everything… That and we now have much nicer gear to set up these days for some reason…….

Now to FINALLY make my rocker protection and figure out how to haul firewood short distances other than inside….

Nice Job, don't think the wife would let me permantly mount storage in our TJ, but if she did, something simular to yours would be in order.

That's pretty awesome. I love your telescoping pole idea to hold up the rear window as a rain shelter. How did you attache those, or are they just stuff above the roll bar?

The rear window holder has worked out great for loading in the rain. When I decided to make something it had to be quick and easy to use due to pouring rain conditions. I first started with the idea of using boat "T top" poles, brackets and fittings to make a pull out awning support.
Then I decided to just weld short tubing stubs to the rollbar that allow the 1" aluminum poles to slide in, very quick and simple. I realized I had some rollbar tubing clamps I did not use lying around and welded the stubs to them, which allows for rotating the clamp to change angle of the roof. I also have a small grey tarp that will provide complete weather protection for the rear area.

Do you have any pictures of the panel on the tailgate? Does it fold down? Did you make it?

I can highly recommend a tailgate shelf......... I use it often on the trail..... and in the parking lot loading the cooler...

I made the shelf out of stainless with a 1/2' lip around it, and it uses a stainless piano hinge. A 1/2" square tube spaces the shelf away from the tailgate to allow air to the vents. I used stainless pop rivets to attach it. I was planning a fancy latch but have almost no room for one, I also had bigger ideas for supports. For now I am using an old dog collar and a bolt with a wing nut. That by the way allows one handed opening (very important) is pretty strong and does not rattle (chain has a cover). I keep a few extra wing nuts real handy just in case....

You can pop the plastic vent out of the rear of the tailgate and access the inside of the center of the tailgate. The rest of the tailgate is double wall and pop rivets or rivet nuts are needed to fasten things.

with all that weight in the back of your LJ, what are you running for springs to keep the rig running balanced and allowing enough spring rate to prevent bottoming out?

I have Rancho 9000 shocks and RE 4.5" springs, and bottom out frequently in the rear. And that's fairly empty!

Thinking of going with 5.5" springs to see if that would improve things.

But you are running 35 tires with 4.5 springs. Little tight in that fender well. I run 33's and 4.5 springs on my LJ and no bottom out problems

I run BDS 3" TJ springs, when I lifted my LJ no LJ specific springs were made yet, it was an early 04' and had 36 miles on it.. I put Air lift bags in the rear springs to get me by until the LJ weight issues were addressed by the spring makers, but right now I am content. The Jeep now stays off the bumpstops unless really pushed and gives controlled handling on the freeway at 70 MPH.

Thanks Rupe.........

I have a some what similar set up but retain my back seat, using the Tuffy drawer and some footman’s loops on top with straps to keep things in place. I have a wire storage shelf I am trying to figure out how to mount to add another level and a stainless door for the tail gate swing down shelf and one day a roof rack.
