Lockers

:smiley_drive:Was wondering if I should put lockers front and rear on my 04 Kj sport? I will definately be locking my rear.

Sure, why not? It really depends on the type of wheeling you are doing though. I've found the KJ does quite well stock with all the traction control stuff it has. It got me to work during the worst blizzard we had this year on unplowed roads (just under 2 feet of snow).

Haven't had any problems so far, People tell me I should lock it. Wasn't sure if I should do both.:smiley_drive:

Ideal: ARB front and rear. For best results around town I think you'll need a selectable locker in the front, since you don't have lock-out hubs.

OK: Detroit rear, ARB front.

Cheap: Aussie rear, open front.

What are you not able to do currently w/o lockers? I think this would be the threshold question to resolve.

I'm consistently impressed with what i can get into and out of with open diffs, flexy suspension, BFG MTs for 3 seasons, Yokahama Geolandar I/T for winter, and intelligent use of tire pressure.

So far haven't had any issues. My Kj goes where I need to go which now is mostly into places to go fishing. Will be doing some camping with the kids this summer. People are saying that I should put lockers in.

Don't waste money on ARB if you do not have at least Dana 44.

Jeep axle are weak unless you have Dana 44 that usually comes with the rubicon, and still 35"+ means a upgrade for the front axle shaft.

Sounds like you ought to save your money, if you've been able to comfortably meet your needs with your current setup. You can take the kids on a lot of camping trips for the cost of F/R ARBs...

X2.

If you are not being turned away from your destination due to lack of traction, and you are not having to use excessive speed to get over the obstacles that you do encounter, and are otherwise not having trouble....then I don't see any need for lockers.

I rarely use mine anymore (I got out of the whole rock crawling thing a few years ago...).

Going to be switching to 4:10s figured if I was going to be swapping gears might as well put lockers in at the same time if I needed them.:smiley_drive:

X3. You'd do better spending a weekend with Bruce Elfstrom instead.

I hopefully speak for most of the ExPo group that did just that in April when I say that we all learned that our stock-ish vehicles are way more capable than we thought in the hands of a better driver. So much so that there are murmurs of a second weekend later this year.

Cheers,
Graham

Lockers are a big expense if you havn't run into situations that require them. They can actually do you some harm on the trail if you don't have a real understanding of how they work. Most of the folks that tell you to make certain mods would be better off keeping their opinions to themselves. Aren't you saving up for a JK anyway:)?

Was going to get a Jk but my Kj will be paid for next year and I don't want another payment. I am happy with my Kj and want to build it more into a expedition vehicle.:smiley_drive:
