Lockers?

For a full time locker in a daily driven rig, I would suggest a Powertrax No-Slip. This type of locker has the benefit of being a 'lunchbox' locker, meaning that anyone can install it in their driveway, without having to remove/reset the gears. The No-Slip worked pretty well for me off road, and I hardly norticed it at all on the streets, other then an occassional chirp in parking lotting when turning and using the throttle. It's not as strong as a Detroit or other full-case lockers, but is cheaper in both actual cost and installation costs. The Lock-Rite is very similar, but you will notice it a lot more on the street than the No-Slip. I wheeled (mostly rock-crawling) on the No-Slip for a number of years and never had an issue with it in my 8.8 rear axle. When I upgraded to Dana 60's I put a Detroit in, however.

I have no problem with a PT No-slip in the front axle if 4x4 is rarely used. But that locker is a bit harder to get to unlock under light throttle than a Detroit or Yukon full case locker. I would definately swap in a built rear axle for any fulltime locker in a KJ.

It just wasn't smooth enough for me. How did yours compare to your Detroit Locker. Is your current Detroit one of the newer/smoother soft lockers?

I currently have the Soft Lockers both front and rear. I think the No-Slip had better street 'manners,' but I have more peace of mind with the full case Detroit, as it is simply a much beefier unit. I never felt that I had any issues getting the No-Slip to unlock. I only ever noticed it while turning while under throttle.

Lockers...You either have them or find excuses why you don't need them.

LOL, but I think this is very close to the truth.

I wheeled for 2/3 of my life with open diffs, but once I had a truck with a fully-selectable rear locker there was no going back for me. My 4WD trucks are all locked front and rear now. You certainly don't have to to have them, but for certain situations and obstacles they are a godsend and an "easy" button.

FWIW...I just aded Aussie locker to rear of FZJ80. <400bux on the bench! Have not not found its limit yet. But, compared to plate diff in rally car, its silent... Not sure if they make'm for Jeeps, worth exploring.

Only if you don't know how and when to use them.

haha, Using that big thing between your ears helps, but lockers are not a get out of stuck free card. For most people quite the opposite.
While lockers have the capability to get you out of trouble, they can also get you in just as much trouble....
Most people would be better off taking the money spent on lockers and spending it on a winch and a reasonable amount of recovery gear.

The 'expo' corner of the 4wheeling world is where you see more solo trips than most.

I concur! Having a locker would have kept my girlfriend and I from having to make a very long walk back to civilization last fall. Immediately there after I installed one in my rear diff. It is a Lock Rite which is not selectable. I love the thing! It does make a ractheting type noise when cornering, but being an old school guy I like to here the noise, (let's me know it's working)! I am still struggling with the decision to put one in the front diff. But I do agree with the statement that it is one of the best mods. And for the record I was driving down a fairly maintained road when I got stuck. Rain and a slight down hill grade worked together to put me off camber leaning against an aspen tree. If I had a locker then I would have been able to climb right out.

Would a locker have just gotten you stuck further down the road? Or would you have called it quits and gone back? For just about the same money, why not a winch?

Why not both?

Locker: Used every second of every trail
Winch: Used maybe once or twice per trip

Locker = Best bang for the buck

That being said, I have two of each on mine.

Also: I've used my winch on myself, maybe twice. Every other time it has been used, has been on someone else's rig.

:sombrero: I have an '08 JKUR, with front/rear Elockers and Eswaybar--

I tow an off-road trailer and I'll never own a jeep with less, or even a 4x4 truck-

I've doneit to many years and know the savior prospects of both lockers/Eswaybar--

Ok, I gotta ask, as this is a new one on me: what the hell is an Eswaybar? Does it improve the handling of your internet around corners?

It's standard on the Jeep Rubicon JK/JKU and is an elex swaybar release, rather than having to physically disconnect the swaybar links !

Just a button KEWL--

:sombrero: You mean your Eswaybar system, or your FRONT SWAYBAR links--not talking about the rear

Nice. That sounds pretty handy. I just removed mine once and threw them in the trash.

Insurance won't cover you if there's a wreck and they find your rear swaybar links (NOT THERE)-
