Locking Center Console

I think the point of a Tuffy is the visual deterrent in so far as it's pretty obviously not a regular center console and so I think it's to your advantage not to disguise it that much. If you have truly important stuff (say like vehicle papers, passports, guns, etc.) a true safe that is hidden is a much better idea. I don't think they are serving quite the same purpose. This is a way to dissuade a would be thief by demonstrating that your stuff won't be easy to take and hoping they make the right decision to just along. But it's not all that hard to break into. It'll just take 10 minutes and make lots of noise, something a relatively rational loser will know and unless you're parked in a very out of the way place, most likely no one will bother. OTOH, a crackhead looking for stuff to pawn won't even be able to open it and so your CDs, cell phone and camera are reasonably safe.

I tend to lean the other way on this...seems to me that most vandals who do this break, grab, and run stuff won't know that the Tuffy console is difficult to get into...so they're going to TRY, thinking that there's something in there worth getting. So even if they don't get in to the visible Tuffy, you'll have damaged door locks or smashed windows, and damage to the Tuffy. I'd be inclined to have the lock box out of site combined with the effective deterrence of hasp locks and alarm/blinking light.

That probably is the more valid point, hard to say. In any case trying to understand a wacked out criminal mind isn't necessarily gonna be based on a lot of reasoning.

I use this box, but if I'm leaving the vehicle for more than just running into a store, I just prop it open to show there's nothing worth taking. This has worked well in my open jeep. You could probably put it under a seat with a little ingenuity(sp?)

I like this idea. Locks just keep the honest man honest. If a meth head really wants something, he'll get it. . . . they have alot more energy than most people

Not to be a party pooper but I can cut one of these off with a mid size set of bolt cutters. Takes about 71 seconds. While they look better with the trick mounts the circular type is the best.

I can only imagine a thief thinking that if they can pop the lock and open the door a little with the handle, they could just RIP the ends out of the sheet metal. I think that is best used as a visual deterrent - but I have already been wrong once this year... ;)
