I remember seeing an old review video on frontiers and tacomas and..something else that sucked.

They said the Frontier was a nicer truck on the road, but the taco won hands down offroad. I believe it now due purely to ground clearance.

You just gonna have to work more for it :p

Jeus...3.36...******...haha Im on 5.29s..haha

Weird trannies indeed. Tall gears really.

Mine is this..

First Gear: 3.830:1
Second Gear: 2.062:1
Third Gear: 1.436:1
Fourth Gear: 1.00:1
Fifth Gear: 0.838:1

So really your over all drive ratio..stupid tall compared to mine. Even stock when i had 4.10s.

Odd indeed..

You'll find out!

Haha sounds about right. I love how my truck drives in pretty much all situations. I've driven a Taco before on the road, and even knowing how much lower the Frontier is, I'd still pick a Frontier, for various reasons. The Tacoma may have another leg up on the Frontier offroad. Where's the power band on those things? My only complaint about the offroad performance of my truck is that the power happens higher in the rev range than I'd like.

Ground clearance aside, I really think the difference between the Frontier and the Taco is really splitting hairs.

Haha I'll just be using my armor more than you I guess! :D

Yep. So maybe what sounds like a stupid tall ratio for you might not be for me hahaha.

Powrrband on frank, the 1st gen tacos is pretty smooth. The 5vzfe is a torque monster. For getup and go I'd say 2500-3000 it wakes up though.

We will do a rig swap next time. Should a last time..I've never been in a frontier. Always fun to drive different rigs.

Man, this is an awesome thread!!! It took me a few days to get through it, but awesome!!!! I never ever thought I'd say this, but man, I've gotta get outta TX and up there! A buddy of mine from high school moved to Wyoming and got his degree then went to grad school in Montana. I went up there once on a trip and we headed over to the Flaming Gorge Dam and floated the Green River for 3 awesome days fly fishing the whole way down.

My brother has a prox4 and loves it. I've gotta send this thread over to him so he can read through it!

I read through the SOS trip report blackdawg and loved it! Man, I long for the day when I'm done with my rig and I'm setting my sights north!

Cool thread!

Sounds like your power band is in the same place as mine then.

Sounds like a plan!

Hey man thanks so much!

Yeah Montana is a fantastic place to be. The scenery is hard to beat, and it's very easy to get away from people up here. There's only like a million people in the whole state. There's almost nowhere better for fly fishing than here too.

Let me know if you ever make it out this way, I love showing people around.

Dang, there's like a million people in my back yard :( I grew up in a very sparsely populated area in the TX panhandle. When in the Army, I was stationed in upstate NY. Both were awesome! I can't wait to head that way and get away from all the noise! Some day I'll take you up on your offer brother! I hope to have my rig done by next summer!

Oh man, you had to mention fly fishing... I'm heading up to the mountains in northern New Mexico in a cpl wks to do some fly fishing and camping! I can't wait!!!

Sooooo... couple small updates....

My package of Expedition Overland swag arrived, so I found the perfect spot to put a sticker or two. :D

Also, I decided it was time to man up and go to a proper tire size. I blame Monte. :sombrero: Price was great though, and I am over the moon at how great it looks. Will post more pics tomorrow.

Looks good, still waiting to see the bigger tires on it...:coffee:

BTW, how many inches from the ground to the flat part of the rock sliders under the B-pillar?

Haha my friend, that is a 285 in that last picture.

Right under the B pillar I am currently at 15.25 inches. :D 12.75" under the front diff. I may end up adding another 1/4 inch under the front if my OMEs don't settle much more.

That's too funny, I was looking at those tires and thinking "man, those 265s look just the perfect size for the lift and with tons of tread on them, not sure why he's upgrading them" LOL

The 285s look fantastic, perfect look proportionally. Any before pics (same angle for a comparison)? What was the before height under the B pillars? For some reason I'm recalling 16" for my Pathy with the 265s but I'll check tonight and confirm.

What are your initial impressions of the size? And what did you do with the 265s?

Haha yeah the 265s are perfect when they're actually 285s. I love the way it looks. The proportions are really awesome with those tires on there. It just looks right, like it's exactly how it's supposed to be. With this amount of lift, I really think that the 285 is the perfect tire size.

Before heights were 14.5" and 12".

I've taken them on the highway and around town a lot the last couple days, and I can say that the truck feels no different whatsoever. Still feels kind of snorty and powerful, still steers the same, still drives the same on the highway. I'm noticing no change at all except for the speedometer being very slightly off.

Here's the pics!

Here's my comparison pics...

Before

After

I just can't get over how great it looks. It's exactly the right tire diameter and the right width. Couldn't be happier. I did go with another set of the General Grabber AT2s, which are fast becoming my favorite tire. They do seem like a slightly short 33, but they are the perfect size for the truck I think.

Sorry to ask, on phone so searching is pain in the ***, but how much lift do you have?

Btw, I agrees the truck looks great!

Haha that depends if you're starting with my measurements or a truck with not totally sagged stock suspension. My truck sat 1/2" lower than it should have pre-lift. Currently I have the front at 3" and the rear at 3.25". If you relate that to not sagged stock suspension, then I'm at 2.5"/2.75" I may bring the front end up a little bit more yet. Haven't decided yet.

Oh, one other thing. I got a Bluetooth OBDII reader and the Car Gauge Pro app for my Android. With it, I was able to adjust my idle up (I have a buzzy AC pump, the higher idle helps), advance my timing by 2*, and clear a check engine light (I have a recurring P1446 vent control valve code).

Cool little setup. Made my buzzy AC quieter, smoothed my idle out a bit, and made my throttle response noticeably better.

Awesome setup, I am looking at getting the same size tire but in 17" for my pathfinder. What Bluetooth obdII did you buy? I would love to get one. Also where you about to change the Speedo for the larger tires with the app?
