Long Ranger Gas Tank- Advice Needed

Hello All:

I have a 2012 Jeep 4-Door Unlimited Rubicon. Rides great, BTW.
Question: I'm considering purchasing the Long Ranger gas tank for my rig. I do have a Magna Flow Cat Back exhaust- Just FYI (not sure if the Magna Flow would interfere with the gas tank install).

Is this tank a worthwhile purchase? Reliable? Safe? Easy to install?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Also open to other brands.
Thank you all in advance,
Randy:Wow1:

If it's an original Long Ranger tank, made in Australia then it's a really excellent product. I've seen them in JK's over here in Oz, but I didn't know they did exports. They take the time to computer analyze the available space and make them up using CADCAM techniques out of top quality materials, designs and features. They make them for lots of vehicles and will do custom and one-off work too.......not cheap but really good stuff never is.

I have a Long Ranger auxilliary tank in my 2010 Jeep Rubicon Unlimited.

It's supposed to be bolt in for 2011's and previous. I have a Hemi in my Jeep so the instal required some minor exhaust work, as expected. I would be wary that the tank in the 2012 might require more extensive work. It would be worth a phone call exchange or at least emails with Long Ranger to confirm fitment.

As far as the tank, it's great. Adds considerable range, easy to use, no safety issues. To use the fuel in the auxiliary tank you transfer from the auxilliary tank into the oem tank, which is painless and trouble free. The sender sucks. They sent two, foreshadowing the first sender's early demise. But it doesn't matter anyway. I haven't bothered to drop the tank and instal sender #2 yet, and probably never will. Since the auxilliary tank fills from the same filler as the oem tank, you end up filling both at once. Reset Trip A or B at each fill up and you will always know you're fuel state. I run on the oem tank until about 50 miles of indicated range and then pump from the Long Ranger into the oem tank until the transfer is complete.

When I ordered mine, through ARB, Long Ranger hadn't come out with their armored version yet. So I had a skid fabbed for it. I would order the armored version, the tank is vulnerable installed without some protection, skid or built in or both.

HMMM, SEEM TO BE HAVING ISSUES WITH PHOTOBUCKET. I'LL POST PHOTOS LATER.

BTW, I didn't do the installation, a local shop did. The reported that it really took two guys because of the weight of the tank and the access to mounting bolts, etc. Putting the skid in place was a two man job for the same reason, even after RROR finished fabbing it. Also, we had to trim the AEV differential slider for clearence. When we'd trimmed as much of the slider as we were comfortable with we let the aluminum auxilliary tank skid and the steel slider argue fitment out. After a week in Moab they had it settled and there was no more interference, which had manifest itself as some squeeking when the two hit. The 2011 and previous charcoal cannister gets relocated behind the rear axle, don't know about 2012's. With the AEV 4.5" suspension the tank is not noticable, empty or full.

Thank you!

JPK & Doctor W-

Thanks again for the valuable information. I'm in contact with ARB as of today.

The "armored" version is available. I'll post photos when the job is done.

Best,
Randy

Genright has one also. It mounts in place of the muffler and rear storage bin. JPK thanks for the pics they answer a lot of questions I had about the Long Ranger.

I'm not sure what you'd have to do with the muffler, but I'd like to figure out a way to use both the Long Ranger and the genright.

That would be A LOT of extra weight. But, You would have to dump the exhaust somewhere. Probably right before the rear axle.

Your suspension can handle the weight since we have the same AEV set up I do, and with a full tank and loaded to the gills there is no hint of an issue. But I don't see much advantage given the range just the Long Ranger or Genright alone would add.

Even with the Hemi in my Jeep it has a well over 400 miles range on the road, typically 500+ on the highway. About 350 off road.

Are you going to get the new AEV 10 gal tank that mounts to the spare? Talk about extending your range!

I know this is bringing up an old thread. However just a question I haven't seen answered (or asked yet). I see with this tank you need to pump fuel from the aux tank into the OEM tank. You mentioned it takes ~40 min to do this. Can it be done while in transit, or do you have to pullover for this to take place?

Septu,

I typically pump while in transit (and the pump is wired into the ignition circuit, so the pump only works when the key is in the "run" position.) I run until the fuel light goes on for the oem tank and then hit the pump switch while continuing to drive. The pump rate is more than adequate to keep up with fuel requirements for the engine while re-filling the oem tank.

Jorsn, missed your post earlier. I believe I'm going to add the AEV fuel carrier. More for generator and chainsaw use for camping than use than for the Jeep, but it would give me ~50gals. WOW!
