I have always loved the LC80. Today I found a 1996 LX450 with 130,000 miles on it. The interior is perfect. The body looked really clean. Under the truck look good. It seems it has been a kid hauler. I did drive it. It seem solid with maybe a little floating up front. I am planning on redoing the suspension anyway. Is this a good deal at $6,000. What types of issues should I expect to have with a LC with this mileage? I am very interested and do not want it to get away.

Front end should be rock solid, unless the alignment is off. Two ways the alignment could be off are accident and the alignment was not properly done or couldn't be properly done because something was bent. Or a lift was added without putting in new bushings to allow proper adjustment of the caster.

Does it have a lift of more than 1 to 2"?

If it had factory lockers, that would be a major plus in my book. As would things like limited number of owners. Knowing the history of the rig, etc.

As far as price, it's a really tough call. Prices of Land Cruisers and LX450s are falling like a rock right now. A few years ago, that would have been a pretty good deal. Today, assuming the rig is in perfect condition for it's age and mileage, I'd say it's an OK deal. But price also depends on where you live. Some areas, LCs are very rare, so that causes the value to be higher than other areas, where they are a dime a dozen.

I'd run a car fax on it for sure. Look for signs of any body or frame damage. Flood damage. Check it for rust. These are the things that would most concern me.

With that mileage and depending on maintainence, you'll probably need to do so a major coolent service on it, including replacing some heater hoses. The headgasket issue might end up rearing it's ugly head. The entire front axle probably needs a rebuild and rear axle probably needs a service. Starter and alternator will probably need a rebuild by this time, if they haven't already been done. So things to consider as they add to the overall cost of ownership.

Check for coolant leakage on the side of the block, sparse HG problems even with white-glove treatment. The rest is PM. Succeeding the HG, plan on the contacts for the starter (no biggy) and plan on a replacement for a short 1-2" heater hose. The rest should be relatively rock solid and things you'd check on any vehicle.

Thanks for the information. The owner has agreed to let me take it to a service shop to have them look at it. It is in San Antonio. The only issue was he said if something was wrong, he was not going to drop the price, so I would be out about $100. It has no lift. From what I can tell the LX has softer shocks then the LC. This maybe what I am feeling. I just don't know yet.

IMOP,

If it looks and seems solid and well cared for, pull the trigger.

$6k is a great price for a clean relatively lowmileage LX, especially if its locked (I didnt see a specification)

These vehicles are amazing at taking a large amount of. I dont advocate being a trashed one, but for one that hasnt had the best maintanence, a long weekend of basic work will get it up to snuff.

i would just plan on doing a head gasket as preventative maintenance i have been building an lx 450 for a customer and we did the HG as preventative maintenance his truck only had 90,000 miles on it and the #6 fire ring was starting to separate still had some life left in it tho. on my 1994 fzj 80 i had 220,000 miles on the original hg before it bit the dust. I also have a 93 fzj 80 with 260,000 original mile on the hg im not driving that till the summer after i do the HG:sombrero:

if your going to pay asking price make sure it has front and rear locking diffs if it does not its not worth the 6 grand in my opinion

The lexus did come with plusher seat foam too

if you do get this first thing i would do would get a new dizzy cap, rotor, wires, plugs, drain and refill diffs and transfer-case, oil change with toyota filter and over haul the front axle

Well after a lot of research and talking with several different people, I have decided to stick with my GX. I think for me it will be a better deal. I love the LX450, but having a newer truck that I know the history on is a big deal. I know the GX will do everything I am going to ask it to do. I hope to get started on the project soon. I just need to get my wife out of it:smiley_drive:! I thank everyone for your help.
