Looking for a definitive answer - will 18" rims fit on an '09 G55 AMG?

So "generous sharing of information" does not include suggesting he look at a forum, like Benzworld, where he will find A LOT more information on 18" wheels on later model G's?

And yes, my definition of "expedition" vehicle includes those that can run effective offroad-sized tyres, easily obtainable anywhere in the world, you know, during an "expedition"

EDIT: Benzworld = http://www.benzworld.org/forums/g-class/

No, I don't think most people on BW are going to understand why someone with a G55k would want to get smaller wheels or what the larger tire sizes are that will fit for off road use.

Benzworld is a perfect resource for getting opinions on new 22's or making a 2003 look like a 2011 ;)

Agreed. And I have read Gari's "Overland, a Mercedes Benz Journey Through the Americas". - done in a 1980's diesel W460. Not quite a G55.
Has anyone done anything like that in a G55? I would be very impressed if they had. Better take a laptop with star diags.

I completely agree that a G is a great expedition vehicle, no argument there. I have done many thousands of km in my W460 and intend to do a lot more, especially now it has a OM606 n/a engine.

So, by this logic all "overland" vehicles must be at least 30+ years old and diesel? I guess this knocks out all 100 - 200 series Land Cruisers, Any LR 3/4, Range Rover, Range Rover SC, etc. It also seems that your definition of "overland" can only be applied to journeys that are multi continent, around the world globe trotting events. While I appreciate your point of view, I feel that my "overland" experience, while confined to the borders of the continent at this point in my life due to the constraints of work and family are no less valid than your views. I get out with the wife and kids, teach them that they can have just as good (or better!) time in a tent under the stars by a campfire as in a hotel with a pool and cable TV, and we get to see what's down every long gravel lane or trail that we decide to explore.

If I would have had my druthers I would be driving a regular 500, the power of the 55 definitely is overkill. This vehicle happened to fall in my lap at what was the right time for me, and I am happy with it. I do not understand your disdain for this truck, or the need to explain to you why I appreciate it. ExPo is a great forum with a generally positive vibe and I enjoy visiting the site and will continue to do so when I can - happy wheeling.

Certainly not 30+ years old, but the most popular overland vehicles tend to be the more basic end of the spectrum. Just ask plenty of this forum's members if they would rather a 70-series Landcruiser or a 200-series with all the fruit, for overlanding (big or small trips) Which is going to be the most reliable and bush-serviceable? Which one are you happy to scratch up, drive through water crossings, drive over heavily corrugated tracks?

Over here (Australia) Landcruisers and Nissan Patrols dominate the offroad scene. Most of which are diesels. The new Nissan Patrol is a huge gas-only V8. Not popular at all in the offroad scene and Nissan fans are not happy about it. Nissan have abandoned that slice of the market.

USA is very gasoline-centric so people have made that work for them while exploring a big country, but diesel *is* is better choice for many reasons, particularly outside USA. Look practically anywhere else and you can only buy large "SUV"s in diesel.

Anyway happy wheeling to you in your chosen vehicle.
