Saw the truck. Total used up, misrepresented, turd. At least he met part way. Oh well- it was a beautiful day for a drive.

On to the next!

What are Uber-Birfields? If you are talking about longfields or some other chromoly birfield, while stronger in the rocks they wear very fast and are not really designed for a truck that will see alot of miles, more of a bit of kit for rock crawlers. Just FYI Good luck with the search.

I will research this - thanks for the heads-up! I am very how larger bearings would lead to shorter life. Would not the greater size distribute weight better? All info is appreciated!

These aftermarket Birfields are cryo-treated to be less brittle so the metal will "stretch" more before it cracks, essentially the metal is softer. That softer metal will cause the inner bell of the birf, the balls, and the cage to wear faster in a fulltime 4WD rig as they are constantly under load.

Think soft-rubber compound tires vs one designed for more mileage. Soft compund will give better traction, but will will wear out a lot faster than a harder rubber.

I'm not sure I want to sell this, but thought I'd toss this out and see what happens.

1992 Toyota Land Cruiser
203,000 miles
4.0 3FE engine, Auto transmission, full-time 4WD

Since I picked it up I've done a good deal of maint and mods to make it a reliable and capable vehicle for backcountry travel. It has been a very reliable vehicle and has been on many long trips without a problem.

Here's a list of recent mods & maint.-

Dark tinted windows.

New Orbital battery.

Full tune-up with new plugs, wires, cap, rotor, etc.

New water pump, new radiator hoses, new belts, new radiator.

New starter and alternator.

Front brake job with new rotors and upgraded 100 Series brake pads.

Put hubs on the front axle to reduce wear on birfs and get better mileage.

Lifted 3" with Old Man Emu suspension using stiffer springs than stock (850/863 springs).

33x12.5x15 BFG AT's on steel 15x8 Soft 8 wheels with full-size spare and 2nd backup spare. 6 tires total. 2 front tires were new this Spring, 2 rear tires are about 60% tread.

Body & interior-

Body is in good shape, it does have a few dents and scratches. The drivers-front fender has been hit just under the corner blinker with a 5" long by 2" tall dent in it. Also got into the fender flare.

The rockers have both been hit, dented on the drivers side and the pinch seam on the passenger side has been kissed.

There is a small paint chip and a couple scratches on the drivers quarter panel.

No rust anywhere, this was a Texas vehicle until a few years ago. The body is very clean other then the damage mentioned above.

Interior is in decent shape for a '92. The dash is clean, no cracks, nothing missing. The drivers seat cover is torn on the bottom cushion from getting in & out, but the rest of the seats are in great shape. The carpet was pulled out of the back cargo area because of a weird stain.

Has power windows and locks.

Alpine stereo with 10 disc CD changer under seat.

What is needs-

The A/C was charged this Summer and worked, but there's a leak in the system and it quit working. Leak needs to be fixed.

The cruise control quite working shortly after I got it. I've done some reading and it seems to be a solenoid that is known to cause problems.

The exhaust rattles around under the driver, the cat converter took a hit coming down Rose Garden Hill and it's been loosened up.

Has an oil leak from the rear main seal. I have a FelPro gasket for the repair, it just needs to be done.

Extras-

I recently built a Safari-style tube bumper for the front-end. I do have the stock bumper that will go with it as well.

Has a winch mount and Warn XD9000 winch mounted to the frame, under the bumper. Will include the winch for an additional $500.

I also have a rear axle from an FZJ that does have an e-locker, rear disc brakes and full-float axle shafts. Will be a great upgrade, but the housing needs fab work. (The PO cut off the stock brackets and welded on brackets for a 4 link. Needs factory brackets welded back on) Will include rear axle for an additional $500.

I will be keeping the offroad lights, the RTT, the on-board shower, the freezer/fridge, etc. ;)

NADA value for a clean '92 Land Cruiser with 200k miles is $4,675. Price is $4000. Located in Fruita, CO. Would make a great family camping/exploration rig
. No trades, cash only, not separating ANYTHING unless it sells.

Schatt, Find a 93 or newer, Period!!! Not sure what your budget is, but they can be found for 6000 and under easy.

A must read is the 80 series Newbie Guide on Slee's website. There will be some heavy PM'ing to do that is not cheap .

The 3FE has its own list of virtues that makes it more appealing to some then the 4.5. That said, for his intended purposes the FZJ would be better. I stand by my belief that an FJ80 is the best value in Land Cruisers in the US specifically for an overlanding platform. Yeah, you can find decent FZJ's for under 6k but you can get a cherry FJ80 for less money and they are GREAT on the trail. If you are hung up on lockers you can still install ARB's for less then the price of an e lockered FZJ. I just wouldn't recomend one for alot of freeway driving and/or driving above 6,000 feet. My loaded down FJ80 with 33's and stock gears only musters 45-55mph climbing I70 out of Denver. Kind of a rolling chicane but not as bad as some would lead you to believe. I think the brakes are a bigger issue then the engine power. The upgraded FZJ brakes would personally give me much better peace of mind for freeway and city driving.

Just had to do my duty to represent the 3FE! :D Happy hunting!

Quick update - I have looked at three Cruisers now - all of them in pretty bad shape / high mileage / and no records. It is almost as if the sellers are on drugs while describing the car on the phone. That or they have very LOW standards...

There is a red (yuck) one for sale. No lockers, but clean looking enough in the pictures and priced very well. Will try to see it over the weekend.
