So what's the verdict on the new unit? :coffee:

Sorry, I have been meaning to do a review but have been busy.

Overall I am happy with the new unit. Vehicle nav works great and is about as fast rerouting as my Crossover. I really like the "lane view" which at some freeway interchanges, it will show you a "real life" view of the road, signs and what lane you want to be in. It looks just like what you see out the front window. The "live traffic" part is nice too, as it will let me know if there are congestion problems ahead.

As for topo maps, I used the link to GPS File Depot and when thru downloading and importing SoCal topo maps for our trip into Joshua Tree NP. Since these are free maps, I really can't complain too much as they are somewhat outdated. A number of roads up in my area are not listed an these are 20 year old routes.

In the dirt, with the track view turned on, it shows me where I have been (breadcrumb) so I can find my way back should I need to. Again, compared to the Crossover, which had a very surprising number of dirt roads and trails I would not have expected to see, the free topo's are useful but more for terrian views (hills, valleys, etc.). I want to do some research and find out if there are some good, pay for topo maps that are more current and have better number of routes.

One thing I really like is the much smaller and lighter size. I was actually able to put the windshield mount above my rear view mirror and the GPS fit above it and the head liner. Also the ease of docking and undocking the unit in it's craddle. I was also pleasently surprised that even in the mounting location I had it, which was behind the forward edge of the windshield, it got rock solid sat signal. I really thought I would need an external antenna but as it seems, I won't need on. It's nice that I have that option though, should I need it.

Overall I have to say this Nuvi 7x5 series does very well and for the price of $200 I paid, it is not far from my Crossover in function. Since I paid more than twice that for the Crossover, I am sure not getting twice the function or useage. Only thing I would like to see would be built in Topo maps but for the average non-offroad person, this would be useless.

Side benefit is that I feel Garmin is much better at supporting their products regarding map updates and such. Megellan is seriously lacking and honestly, had they come out with a newer update to fix a couple minor issues with the Crossover, it would still be a perfect unit that I would still be happy to use.

Hope that helps some.

Has anyone used a Droid cell phone for Navi? Right now I cant decide if I should buy one cause I can get for $50 bucks with a new contract or should just go buy a Garmin 755t. I realize that the Droid has faults because it uses cell towers as opposed to Sat Navi but just wanting to know if anyone has used it. Still trying to figure out if there is anyway to load topos onto the Droid.

Good stuff!

So do you feel that the screen size is large enough, or do you secretly wish you would have done soemthing like this <-Clicky

I'm thinking the 7"-10" screen would be perfect, but I don't want to discount the simplicity of the Garmin systems just because of the small screen.

I have access to Mapsource, TOPO USA & Nat Geo (all US) for my mapping needs, so I don't think I'll have a problem there.

Howdy,

I have had the Magellan Crossover GPS for a couple years now...

xj_mike,

Did you figure out how to upload custom routes to the Crossover? I have done it with Garmin, but just can't figure out how to do it with the Crossover.

Well, I did it once when we were getting ready for the Mojave Road trip. It was a PITA as I had to take the file from one format and use a converter to a format Megellan would read and then used the SD card to upload it. It gave the waypoints but just generic names. It was somewhat useful but enough of a pain I never did it since.

Sorry I missed this. As for wishing I would have gone with a netbook/laptop, in our situation there is zero room to do so. Our Cherokee is tight enough as it is and the wife would never tolerate a netbook crowding her space nor I blocking the dash. For our use, I am very happy wth the Nuvi solution.

In honesty, I think the whole GPS netbook/laptop is just going over the top. I watch one person showing their setup, with Google Earth and basically could see an overhead view of exactly what they were seeing out the window. Heck, getting to that point, why even take the trip. Just do a 3D flyover with Google Earth and say you have been there... :snorkel: :ylsmoke:

In reality, it's good for some but for me, it takes some of the challenge out of travel. The GPS for us is a secondary check as we travel by map/books and figure it out as we go. The GPS is when we are not 100% or if we needed to backtrack and there are a lot of trails that intersect.

My .02 worth, YMMV.

Garmin Nuvi 500 3.5", and Garmin Nuvi 1450 5.0" are both on sale at Costco for $199. I'd like to grab one for on and off-road use. Which one would you guys recommend?
