Awesome feedback. I didnt know you could get a shell only option from FWC. I would definitely be down to build my own interior. Nothing is quite as right as custom. I will check out XP Camper as well. Keep it coming.

I dont know if I am not drifting from the core of the conversation but I am just wondering how comes we do not have here in North America any of the options widely available internationally such as Geocar,BiMobil,ExKab or the famous aussie styles.
It looks we are stuck in the past and every manufacturer here wants to keep everything as it was 30-40 years ago as there was no major change in the design of truck campers.
Its just my curiosity I am not saying is good or bad.

Sounds like you looking for an earthroamer, something fully hardsided or certainly something that won't fit on a Toyota Tacoma. Anyway in case this might help you I can give you my experience with deciding on a camper.
I went thru the same process deciding what to buy. I have '92 Toyota 4 wheel p/u with a wildernest topper. After 17 years I wanted something a little more comfortable and easier to do road trips in and still offroad but something not massive and still get decent mileage. After a couple of years of thinking about VW vans, 4x4 vans, popup campers, and various other vehicles, I realized that getting a popup camper for my truck was the solution.

I liked the FourWheel camper but live in Colorado so checked out Coyote RV. They have really improved their methods, design and materials over the years. I was quite pleased with their build quality. I decided to buy a shell. It saved quite a few dollars and I could build the inside the way I wanted. What's nice about Coyote RV beside their being friendly and helpful, is they make each one to order so you can have them build it anyway you want. You're not stuck with a certain floorplan, camper size or anything. They will make it to your specifications and add or take off anything you don't need. They should be able to work up something for your demanding needs.

The shell came with queen size bed and L shaped sitting area with cushions. Weight as delivered without jacks was 600lbs.

Since then I have added a 12 volt Norlcold fridge, sink, countertop, watertank, battery, battery isolater etc. and an 85 watt solar panel that keeps the camper battery fully charged. It just takes a couple hours in the morning to top it off. It's working out quite well, keeps the ice cream frozen and the beer cold. I had them add a Yakima track to the top and fastened the solar panel to that.

I have used the camper 3 times so far and am quite happy with it. It's a little hard to pop up but you get into a system after awhile. Similar to what I read about FourWheel Campers too.

hope this helps
