Looking for input from the Nissan snorkel club

None of you are making me feel good about this. Is it acceptable to down a shot of bottom-shelf well whiskey before taking the saw to the fender?

Acceptable? Nearly a requirement! Hey, worst case, down the line you stop by a junkyard and grab a fender.

The good life!! Great looking rig & bike setup. Really ready for all kinds of fun/adventure there!! Nice snorkel too - that is what brought me here researching. :Wow1:

I've quite often wondred if you could ( i know one could if they wanted) make a plug for the hole if you ever decided to take it off on a semi-regular basis.

I know this is old but can't resist commenting for those who don't realize it.... In that picture the alternator is under water, at least in the gen2. The Xterra's alternator is mounted very low, just about the top of the tire.. I believe the OEM air intake is higher than the alternator.
... A buddy just killed his doing that in deep water in Tennessee. He was just retelling about his experience on the subject this weekend. Personally I'm putting the money toward other upgrades. BTW make sure if your planning on this type of traverse that your winch is one of the waterproof ones as well. :)

Do you guys do the associated breather mods for the diffs and the tranny as well?

Most relocate the rear diff breather to the taillight area.

The front axle and gear boxes are vented near the stock air box.

Stock Xterras are not well suited for intentional long duration deep water crossings, and I don't think anyone here has suggested or encouraged that they are.

Snorkels are more of an insurance item should you find yourself in a bad situation, you won't immediately drown the engine. A quick run through a creek is hardly the same conditions as driving through water up to the windows, but a swirl of current or a momentary deep hole you didn't see could send a rush of water into the intake, making what might have been an interesting miscalculation and a splash turn into a inoperable vehicle.

As for the alternator, there is a waterproof one available in the aftermarket I believe. However some Xterra alternators have been exposed to mud and slush and water and still run fine. Others probably died from a hard rain. If it ain't broke.....

Completely prepping an Xterra for submersion is an exercise in futility. However a snorkel is still a useful precaution. I doubt a single post warning fools to not think they have a submarine after installing one will be very effective.

Pretty much don't regret putting one on my truck. I couldn't see shelling out $400 for one though, got mine from Australian ebay for less than half of that. It's rotomolded LLDPE (not fiberglass) and is holding up great.

Aussie eBay? Search terms for alternate source there ? How was the shipping wait tax etc.

Should I have bought mine before bumpers and diff breather extension? (let alone the fact I'm still missing sliders...oh my.) No. But it was hard to argue with a limited time group buy. (I'm caught up on everything else except for the sliders now).

Yes, the alternator is mounted very low on the Xterra, something that all of us don't like. However, when you're in deeper water, you do get the bow wave effect (especially if you're running skids) such that the alternator and engine stay pretty dry if you keep the momentum up. I've had water come up over the hood prior to have a snorkel and had no problems. But, and it may be here in the thread somewhere, if you want it to be airtight you have to get the Volant CAI, which means relocating your horn, too. The newer models of that don't have the bump out that lets you keep the horn in the stock position. Then make sure you seal up the connections nicely.

That being said, it's worth it. You get piece of mind in the water but the biggest reason is to help you get a cooler and cleaner air stream, and that it does.

Plus, women love them. Truth. And by love them, I mean that most women will look at you like you're a damned oddball.

Oddball? I'm already driving a 32 year old 4x4 Dodge extended van. A snorkel would change nothing! The Christmas wreath on the grill softens the weirdo image.
