Looking to buy a Trooper-what to look for

Actually the motor most folks swap for the 2.8L is the 3.4L, from a Camaro I think.

Nothing wrong with the 2.8L IMO, but it doesn't really make any more power than the Isuzu 2.6L 4-banger. I wouldn't hesitate to get either one. But if you are looking to do the motor swap then you definitely want a 2.8L version.

I didnt read the entire thread but I am on my second trooper, having tried 2, owning Jeep XJ's in between the ownership of Troopers. Ive had a '94 trooper and now have a '00 trooper.

I personally think its the best kept secret for a family 'off the beaten path' vehicle. It has tons of room, and needs very little to be very capable. There is some discussion about the dual cam engine drinking oil. Mine did until I read someplace about trying Rotella synthetic oil. -this took care of the issue.

Scott Brady rated the Trooper as one of the best vehicles hes had at Expeditions West. (to add to what the OP said about this being his wifes DD)...my wife would DD this in this expedition ready state: http://www.expeditionswest.com/vehicles/ewvehicles/Isuzu_Trooper/index.html

Some more of my thoughts:

My first 4x4 was a used 1986 Trooper with a 4 cyl engine and a 5 speed trans. It was awesome for getting us to camping spots. We loaded it down with three people, 2 huskies, bikes on the back, canoe on the roof and all our gear. Had to gear down on big hills but who cares. It was also nice for driving around town during the week. I felt very safe riding through big winter snow storms. It had 200,000 plus kilometers on it when I sold it.

Just took my second Gen out for her first off-road camping trip near Death Valley and she did GREAT. Very impressed with how smooth she is. Only issue was in ice covered off camber trail, but everyone in the group had issues with the same. We had 2 people, 2 large dogs and too much camping gear. I'm very pleased with my newest Trooper.

I should point out that the Trooper was the only vehicle that did not suffer a break down or 3 on this trip. :)

I have a Jeep XJ and wheel it in both the desert and mountains. I have recently been looking for a vehicle for my wife and am looking at everything from a Grand Cherokee to a Land Rover Discovery. In the mix are also Land Cruisers and Troopers. I read through this and I agree, you do seem to get alot for the money with a Trooper.
